Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

The knife fell from Isabella's hands, clattering against the metal counter and dropping behind the grill.
She stared at Alessandro, the air rushing out of her lungs as if she had been struck by a freight train. Her mind raced back to her father's face that night—the nervous twitch of his eye, the way he had avoided looking at her when he kissed her forehead, the frantic whisper: *Just touch up your powder, sweetheart. Don't keep him waiting.*
He hadn't been waiting for her to walk down the aisle. He had been waiting for the gunshots.
"No..." she whispered, burying her face in her hands, her knees giving out. She slid down the side of the counter, collapsing onto the floor. "No, he wouldn't. He's a coward, he's a degenerate gambler, but he’s my father..."
The sound of footsteps rounded the counter. Isabella flinched, expecting rough hands, expecting handcuffs, expecting punishment.
Instead, a heavy, warm cashmere coat was draped gently around her shivering shoulders. Alessandro knelt before her, getting down on one knee in the grime of the diner kitchen. He didn't touch her skin, respecting the wild, feral fear in her eyes, but he stayed close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his massive frame.
"A father protects his child," Alessandro said softly, his voice devoid of the cruelty she had spent her whole life expecting from men of his world. "Richard Moretti is a parasite who used you as currency. He is not your family, Isabella. He never was."
She looked up at him through tear-blurred eyes. "Why do you care? To you, I was just a contract. A business merger to secure territory."
Alessandro’s jaw tightened. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the ruthless mafia boss slipped, revealing a depth of emotion so raw, so violently protective, that Isabella felt her breath catch in her throat.
"You think this was about territory?" Alessandro let out a low, humorless chuckle. "I control four states, Isabella. I have senators on my payroll and shipping lines across two oceans. I didn't need your father’s crumbling import docks. I took the meeting because *you* were sitting in his office six months ago, looking at him with broken eyes while he screamed at you for being late."
Isabella froze. "You saw me?"
"I’ve been watching you for two years," he confessed, his voice dropping into a dark, intimate register that made her pulse thunder against her collarbone. "I watched you build an animal shelter from nothing while your father gambled away your inheritance. I watched you refuse to bow to every arrogant syndicate heir who tried to court you. You were a queen living in a pit of vipers. When your father offered your hand to clear his debts, I accepted before he could finish the sentence—not to own you, Isabella. But to take you away from him."
She swallowed hard, her chest aching with a complex, dizzying storm of emotions. "Then why not tell me? Why let me marry you like a slave?"
"Because you hated me," he said simply. "You believed the stories they tell about the Vitale family. If I had told you I wanted to protect you, you would have thought it was a trick. You needed to choose to trust me. But tonight, that choice is running out."
He stood up, offering his large, calloused hand to her.

"Enzo Russo knows you're in Blackwood," Alessandro said grimly. "His scout was tracking Martha's car twenty minutes ago. Within the hour, fifty men will be here to level this town until they find you. I have an armored convoy three blocks away. You can run into the storm alone, or you can take my hand and let me keep you alive."
