Chapter 7 - Safe House Shadows

Following the bloodbath at the St. Regis, Alex moved Grace to his most secure location: a secluded stone estate nestled deep in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by dense pine forests and accessible only by a private, guarded mountain road.
The house was dark and quiet, lit only by the crackling embers of a massive stone fireplace in the great room. Outside, snow had begun to fall, dusting the hemlock trees in soft white.
Grace sat on the plush leather rug before the hearth, a glass of red wine in her hand, staring into the flames.
She had washed the dust and gunpowder from her skin, changing into soft flannel trousers and an oversized wool sweater that swallowed her petite frame. For the first time in six months, the suffocating weight of Arthur’s death, Kane’s threats, and the imminent threat of gang war had lifted.
The heavy oak door behind her opened, and Alex walked in.
He had discarded his ruined tuxedo for dark jeans and a black henley shirt with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, revealing the intricate tattoos spiraling up his forearms. He carried a fresh bottle of wine and two glasses.
"Dominic Rossi signed the unconditional surrender two hours ago," Alex said softly, sitting down beside her on the rug. "He’s retiring to Florida under Vitali supervision. The Vance soldiers have accepted the transition without a single dissenting vote."
Grace looked at him, the orange firelight reflecting in her hazel eyes. "It’s over, then?"
"It’s over," Alex said. He poured wine into her glass, then his own, setting the bottle aside. "You did it, Grace. You saved hundreds of lives. You prevented an all-out war that would have torn this entire region apart."
Grace took a small sip of wine, looking down at the dancing flames. "I thought... I thought when this was over, I would feel relieved. Like I could finally pack my bags and go to a small town in Vermont, open a small bookstore, and pretend none of this ever happened."
Alex froze, his jaw tightening slightly. He stared down into his glass, his voice dropping into a rough, strained whisper.
"Is that what you still want?" he asked. "A clean slate? A ticket out?"
Grace turned to look at him. "Why do you ask?"
Alex set his glass down on the hearth with deliberate slowness. He turned his body toward hers, his dark eyes intense, burning with an emotion he had suppressed behind boardroom suits and mob warfare for nearly a year.
"Because the thought of walking into that office on Monday morning and seeing an empty desk outside my door makes me sick," Alex confessed, his voice raw with vulnerability. "Because for eleven months, you were the only sane thing in my life. And over the last week, watching you stand beside me, watching your brilliance, your courage... I realized I don't give a damn about the Vance territory, Grace. I only care about you."
Grace’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Alex..."
"I know what I am," Alex continued, leaning closer, his gaze searching every millimeter of her face. "I am a killer, a syndicate boss, a man who lives in the shadows. You deserve a peaceful life. You deserve sunshine, safety, and a man without blood on his hands. But if you walk away from me now, you take my heart with you."
Tears pricked the corners of Grace’s eyes. She set her wine glass down, reached out, and placed her palm against his chest, right over his racing heart.
"You idiot," she whispered, a tear spilling over her lashes, accompanied by a soft, trembling laugh. "Do you really think I spent eleven months fixing your schedules and memorizing your coffee preferences just because I was doing my job?"
Alex stared at her, stunned. "Grace..."
"I could have left months ago, Alex," she murmured, leaning in until her forehead rested against his. "Arthur gave me enough money to vanish to Europe last year. I stayed because of you. I stayed because every time you looked at me, every time you asked for my counsel, every time you walked into that room... I fell a little more in love with you."
Alex let out a low, ragged groan, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
His lips crashed into hers—not with the polite restraint of an employer, but with the desperate, starving passion of a man who had finally reached his home. Grace gasped against his mouth, her fingers tangling into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the heat consuming them both.

The snow continued to fall silently against the dark pines outside, but before the roaring fire, the walls between them were completely, beautifully obliterated.
