Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Old Guard

Thursday arrived under a sky the color of bruised iron.

The St. Regis Hotel in Midtown Manhattan was surrounded by an invisible ring of steel. Plainclothes security teams patrolled every entrance, while the hotel’s opulent ballroom was locked down for the most historic summit of the American underworld in twenty years.

The heavy mahogany double doors swung open, and the heads of the Five Families fell silent.

Alex Vitali walked in first. He was clad in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding presence radiating absolute lethality.

And on his arm, regal and breathtaking, was Grace Parker.

She wore an emerald-green velvet evening gown that swept the floor, her bare shoulders framed by delicate diamond drops. Around her neck hung the ancient gold medallion of the Vance Regent—a symbol not seen in public for nearly a half-century.

Across the long circular table, Marcus Kane stood up, his brutal, scarred face twisting into a furious scowl. At his side, Dominic Rossi looked like a cornered rat, his eyes darting between Alex and Grace.

"What is this circus?" Kane roared, slamming a heavy fist onto the table. "Vitali brings a woman to the Commission? Arthur Vance is dead! His seat belongs to the strongest man left standing in Brooklyn!"

"The seat belongs to whoever holds the Regent charter, Kane," the ancient chairman of the Commission, Don Falcone, said from the head of the table. "That is the law written in blood in 1951. You know this."

Falcone turned his milky, rheumy eyes toward Grace. "Miss Parker. Do you present the Vance charter?"

Grace stepped forward, releasing Alex’s arm. She walked with deliberate, hypnotic grace toward the center of the table, placing the heavy, wax-sealed parchment before Don Falcone.

"The charter is signed and ratified, Chairman," Grace declared, her voice ringing clearly across the vaulted ceiling. "Arthur Vance passed away three days ago. Before his death, as Regent of the Vance organization, I executed the full transfer of all Vance assets, territories, and treaties."

Kane lunged forward, his hands twitching toward his waist, but four armed Commission guards immediately raised their weapons, stopping him dead.

"Who did you transfer it to, girl?" Kane snarled, spittle flying from his lips.

Grace turned her head, her eyes locking onto Alex with an intensity that took the entire room’s breath away.

"To Alex Vitali," she said clearly. "Under one condition, which has been legally bound to the Vitali corporate charter."

Don Falcone picked up the parchment, examining the ancient wax seal and the fresh signatures. "And what is that condition, Miss Parker?"

Grace smiled—a cool, devastating smile.

"That the two families merge not as conquered territory, but as a joint empire," Grace said. "With Alex Vitali as Don, and myself as his sole executive partner."

The room erupted into shocked whispers.

Kane went berserk. "She’s a fraud! She’s an office girl! I’ll carve both their hearts out before I let a secretary rule Brooklyn!"

In a flash of blinding violence, Kane drew a compact ceramic pistol from his sleeve and aimed it directly at Grace’s chest.

"Grace, down!" Alex bellowed.

Alex didn't hesitate. He launched himself across the space between them, tackling Grace to the carpeted floor as Kane fired. The round tore through the wood paneling inches above where her head had been.

Gunfire ripped through the ballroom.

Alex rolled, drawing his own weapon from his tux, and fired two precise rounds through Kane’s chest. The brute stumbled backward, crashing into the banquet table, overturning ice sculptures and crystal glasses before collapsing lifeless onto the floor.

Dominic Rossi raised his hands, dropping to his knees instantly. "I surrender! I yield! Vitali, don't shoot!"

Alex stood up, his breathing heavy, his gun still smoking. He ignored Rossi, ignored the panicked shouts of the other bosses, and looked down at Grace, who was already sitting up, brushing drywall dust from her velvet dress.

"Are you hit?" Alex demanded, dropping to his knees beside her, his hands frantically checking her shoulders, her ribs, her face. "Grace, look at me. Are you hurt?"

Grace looked up into his frantic, terrified eyes—eyes that had never shown fear in the face of death, but were now filled with pure dread at the thought of losing her.

"I’m fine, Alex," she whispered, her hands coming up to touch his face, her fingers sinking into the stubble along his jawline. "I’m not hurt. You saved me."

Alex let out a ragged breath, closing his eyes for a second, and pulled her tightly against his chest in front of the entire assembly of New York’s criminal royalty.

"I told you," Alex whispered fiercely into her hair. "Nobody touches my queen."
