Chapter 3 - The Kingmaker's Burden

The penthouse atop the Vitali Tower was a glass fortress overlooking the shimmering black ribbon of the East River. It was minimalist, modern, and fortified with ballistic glass and redundant security corridors.

Grace stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a cup of chamomile tea cradled between her hands. She had traded her business suit for an oversized cashmere sweater and dark leggings, but her mind was running at full capacity.

Behind her, the double doors of the private elevator chimed.

Alex stepped into the room, unbuttoning his vest. His tie was already undone, his collar open, revealing the strong lines of his throat. He looked exhausted, yet there was an electric, predatory vitality about him that seemed to fill the vast space the moment he entered.

"Rossi made his move," Alex said without preamble, walking over to the marble bar to pour two fingers of bourbon.

Grace turned, her heart rate picking up. "Where?"

"He tried to hit one of Arthur's pharmaceutical distribution hubs in the Bronx two hours ago. Kane caught wind of it and ambushed Rossi’s convoy. It was a bloodbath. Four dead, six wounded, and the NYPD has cordoned off three blocks around Grand Concourse."

Grace closed her eyes, setting her teacup down with a trembling hand. "It started."

"It started," Alex agreed, taking a sip of the amber liquid. He walked toward her, his heavy steps steady and deliberate. "The Commission called an emergency meeting for Thursday night at the St. Regis. Every boss in the tri-state area will be there. Kane intends to claim the Vance seat by right of conquest, arguing that Arthur is incapacitated."

"He can't claim it," Grace insisted, opening her eyes. "The Vance charter requires the Regent’s signature to ratify any transfer of authority. Without my signature, the Commission cannot legally recognize Kane without violating their own founding treaty."

"Which means Kane’s only objective between now and Thursday is to find you," Alex said, stopping inches away from her. "And force your signature on a transfer of power. Or kill you and forge it."

Grace looked up into his dark, obsidian eyes. In the quiet intimacy of the penthouse, the air between them felt thick, charged with an unspoken tension that had been building over months of silent professional proximity, now blown wide open by the violence of their reality.

"I won't sign it," she said fiercely. "Kane is a butcher. If he takes the docks, he’ll turn the entire south shore into a transit route for fentanyl. Arthur spent thirty years keeping that poison out of our neighborhoods. I won't let Kane destroy everything my father and Arthur built."

"I know you won't," Alex murmured. He reached out, his calloused fingers lightly touching a stray lock of hair that had fallen across her cheek, tucking it gently behind her ear.

The touch sent a sudden shiver through Grace's spine. His fingers lingered for a second against the warm skin of her jaw, his touch surprisingly tender for a man who ruled an underworld empire through fear and precision.

"You've been carrying this alone for months, haven't you?" he asked, his voice softening. "Sitting at that desk outside my office, managing my empire while trying to hold another one together with sheer willpower."

Grace swallowed hard, feeling the weight of exhaustion crashing down on her. "I didn't have a choice, Alex. Arthur was like a father to me. When he asked me to protect the family, I couldn't say no."

"You have a choice now," Alex said, his thumb brushing lightly across her cheekbone. "You have me. The Vitali family will back your regency. We will attend the Commission meeting together on Thursday. When Kane tries to claim that seat, you will stand before the Five Families and officially transfer the Vance syndicates to me."

Grace looked at him, searching his face. "And what does the Commission say when the great Alex Vitali walks in with his secretary on his arm?"

Alex let out a low, dark chuckle, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes.

"They’ll realize what I realized three days ago, Grace," he whispered, leaning down slightly so his lips were inches from hers. "That the smartest, most dangerous player in this city was hiding in plain sight. And that she belongs with me."

Before Grace could respond, the phone on the console buzzed sharply.

Alex stepped back, the spell broken, though his eyes never left hers as he answered it.

"Speak," Alex ordered.

"Boss," came Leo’s panicked voice through the speaker. "It’s Arthur Vance. The hospice staff in Greenpoint just sent an urgent transmission. Kane’s men cut the power to the facility ten minutes ago. They’re moving in to take him."
