Chapter 8 - INTO THE LION’S DEN

By eleven o'clock, the private armory beneath the Hudson estate resembled a military staging ground.

Dozens of elite Moretti soldiers in tactical gear were loading magazines, checking suppressed rifles, and reviewing satellite schematics of Terminal 4. Cassian stood at the center table, coordinating communications.

Emily stood near the armory door, wearing dark cargo pants, tactical boots, and a heavy Kevlar vest Dante had strapped onto her himself.

"You stay in the command vehicle with Cassian until the warehouse is secure," Dante said, adjusting the straps on her vest with meticulous care. He was dressed in full black tactical gear, two handguns holstered at his hips, an assault rifle slung across his broad chest.

"No," Emily said firmly, grabbing his wrists to stop his hands. "Russo told you to bring me. If he doesn't see me walking through those doors, he will kill Lily before you even breach the perimeter."

Dante’s jaw tightened. "I will not risk you, Emily. Not again."

"She is my sister, Dante!" Emily’s green eyes blazed with an intensity that matched his own. "For three years, I have been helpless. I ran, I begged, I humiliated myself to keep her alive. I am not sitting in an armored van while you fight for her. If we walk in together, Russo hesitates. That gives you the seconds you need."

Dante stared down at her. He saw no fear in her eyes now—only the unyielding, fierce love of an older sister who would march through the gates of hell to save her family.

Slowly, Dante reached to his side and unholstered a compact, silver Walther PPK. He pressed it into Emily’s hand and wrapped her fingers around the grip.

"Safety is here," he instructed, his voice low and intensely focused. "Point center mass. Pull the trigger until the slide locks back. Never hesitate. If anyone touches you, you put a bullet through their skull."

Emily gripped the cold steel, feeling the weight of it. "I understand."

Dante leaned down, framing her face with his gloved hands, and kissed her fiercely on the lips.

"You are my queen, Emily," Dante whispered against her lips. "And today, we tear their empire to the ground."

Thirty minutes later, a lone black SUV rolled onto the rain-slicked concrete of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Terminal 4 was a cavernous, abandoned shipping warehouse overlooking the gray waters of the East River. Rusted cranes towered above like skeletal giants. The wind off the water howled through broken skylights.

Dante and Emily stepped out of the vehicle.

Dante carried a heavy metal briefcase in his left hand, his right hand resting casually near his hip. Emily walked half a step behind him, her trench coat concealing the Kevlar vest and the pistol tucked into her waistband.

Inside the warehouse, the air smelled of salt water, diesel fuel, and damp decay.

At the far end of the open floor, tied to a wooden chair beneath a harsh halogen floodlight, was Lily. Her face was bruised, her lip split, but her eyes went wide with shock and relief the moment she saw Emily.

"Emily!" Lily cried through the gag in her mouth.

"Lily!" Emily took a frantic step forward, but Dante’s hand shot out, catching her arm gently, holding her in place.

Stepping out from behind a stack of rusted shipping containers was Lucian Russo, flanked by eight heavily armed mercenaries with automatic rifles leveled straight at Dante's chest.

"Right on time, Dante," Russo said, a triumphant, sickening smirk stretching across his aristocratic face. "I see you brought the family heirloom."

Russo pointed toward the metal briefcase in Dante's hand.

"The ledger is inside," Dante said coldly, his voice echoing through the vast rafters. "Release the girl."

"Oh, Dante," Russo chuckled, shaking his head. "You really have grown soft since you took a whore into your bed. Did you honestly think I was going to let any of you leave this warehouse alive?"

Russo raised his right hand, preparing to give the signal to fire.

May you like

"Now," Dante whispered.
