Chapter 6 - NURSING THE BEAST

The Hudson River estate was a fortress of steel, stone, and silence, nestled among heavy pine woods two hours north of the city.
By three in the morning, the rain was beating rhythmically against the bay windows of the private medical suite on the estate’s ground floor. Dante sat shirtless on an examination table, his broad chest and back a tapestry of old scars, bullet wounds, and a sprawling tattoo of the Moretti lion spanning from his shoulder to his ribs.
Emily stood between his spread knees, her ruined velvet gown discarded for an oversized cotton shirt, carefully stitching the deep laceration along his bicep.
Her hands had stopped shaking. Growing up in a rough neighborhood with an alcoholic father prone to violent falls, she had patched up enough wounds to know how to hold a suture needle steady.
"You have remarkably steady hands for a temp worker," Dante said quietly, his voice a low rumble in the quiet room. He watched her face intensely, his eyes tracking every flicker of concentration on her features.
"I had to sew up my father’s head when he fell through a coffee table when I was sixteen," Emily replied softly, tying off the final knot and snipping the thread with surgical scissors. "You learn not to panic when there’s blood everywhere."
She picked up an antiseptic wipe and gently dabbed away the remaining blood from his skin. Dante didn't flinch, but his breathing grew deeper, more deliberate.
"You saved my life tonight, Emily," he said.
Emily paused, her hand lingering on his forearm. She looked up into his dark eyes, finding none of the cold arrogance that usually shielded him. Only raw, unguarded intensity.
"You saved Lily," she whispered. "I couldn't let him kill you."
"Gallo was a dog," Dante said darkly. "Russo used him as a distraction. He knew he couldn't beat me in an open war, so he orchestrated a slaughter to destabilize the families." He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers cupping her cheek, tilting her face toward him. "You shouldn't have been in that room. You shouldn't have had to see that."
"I chose to stay," Emily said, her voice steady. "When you told me to run with Cassian... I couldn't do it. I realized that if you died in that ballroom, I wouldn't just be losing my protector. I’d be losing..."
She trailed off, her cheeks warming under his penetrating gaze.
"Losing what, Emily?" Dante asked, his thumb tracing her lower lip.
"You," she breathed.
The air between them seemed to ignite. Dante let out a low, possessive growl and pulled her forward by the waist.
Emily gasped as her body collided with his bare chest, her hands coming up to rest against his strong shoulders. He didn't hesitate this time. His mouth claimed hers with fierce, desperate hunger, kissing her with a passion forged in fire and gunpowder.
Emily melted into the kiss. The fear, the adrenaline, and the weeks of simmering tension exploded between them. She wound her fingers through his dark, thick hair, pulling him closer, parting her lips to let him deepen the kiss. Dante groaned into her mouth, his hands gripping her hips, lifting her onto the edge of the examination table between his legs.
He broke the kiss for a second, resting his forehead against hers, both of them breathing heavily.
"I told myself you were just collateral," Dante murmured, his voice thick with emotion, his eyes burning with fierce devotion. "A tool to use against Russo. But God help me, Emily... from the second you walked into my penthouse in that ridiculous lace, you ruined me."
"Then don't fight it," Emily whispered, burying her face into the curve of his neck, breathing in his scent of cedar and rain. "Don't be a ghost with me, Dante."
Dante wrapped his powerful arms around her, holding her tightly against his chest, as if she were the only anchor keeping him tethered to the earth.
May you like
"Never," he swore into her hair. "You are mine, Emily. And no one will ever touch you again."
