Chapter 1 - THE CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT

The heavy silence of the penthouse was louder than the thunder rattling the floor-to-ceiling glass.

Emily backed up until the brass rivets of the double entrance doors bit into her shoulder blades. She clutched the soaking trench coat against her chest, her knuckles turning white, her bare legs trembling in the icy draft blowing from the air vents.

The man before her did not move quickly. He moved with the terrifying economy of an apex predator that knew its prey had nowhere left to run.

"Turn your pockets out," he commanded. His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through Emily’s sternum.

"I told you, I don't have anything," Emily whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer panic. "I made a mistake. Look at my phone—the screen is smashed! The text said PH4, or PH1... I couldn't read the smudge. I thought this was the bachelor party. Please. Just unlock the door. I have fifteen minutes."

"Fifteen minutes until what?"

"Until they take my sister!" The confession tore from her throat before she could filter it. It was raw, ugly, and humiliating.

The man paused. His obsidian eyes narrowed, sweeping from her soaked red hair, down the pale column of her throat, across the cheap lace corset peeking out from behind the damp coat, and finally resting on the cracked smartphone shaking in her hand.

"Give it to me," he said.

"What?"

"The phone. Give it to me, or I take it off your corpse."

He didn't yell. That was the most terrifying part. He spoke with the quiet, chilling assurance of a man who had ended lives before breakfast and slept soundly that same night.

Emily didn't hesitate. She held out the phone. Her fingers brushed his as he took it; his skin was warm, calloused, and utterly steady.

He tapped the screen to wake it. The lock screen illuminated his face, casting sharp cheekbones, a straight nose, and a thin, brutal scar running along his left jawline into stark relief. On the display was the surveillance photo of Lily leaving the NYU library. Beneath it, the ultimatum: *Payment due by midnight, or we collect from her.*

The man's thumb swiped over the sender's number. A flicker of recognition crossed his features, so brief Emily almost imagined it.

"The 'Ndrangheta," he murmured, almost to himself. "Salvatore Gallo's crew."

Emily’s breath hitched. "You know them?"

The man looked up, his gaze pinning her like an insect beneath glass. "Everyone in this city answers to someone, little girl. And Gallo's scavengers answer to me."

Emily’s heart stopped. The world tilted sideways. She had run from street thugs demanding three thousand dollars straight into the throne room of the devil himself.

"Who... who are you?" she stammered.

"Dante Moretti," he answered, stepping back toward the center of the vast living room. He tossed her phone onto the glass coffee table, where it landed with a sharp clatter. "And you have precisely twelve minutes to explain why a girl carrying Gallo's collection notice just walked into my private residence wearing bedroom lace and asking for a bachelor party."

"I told you the truth!" Emily cried, taking a frantic step forward, desperation overriding her fear. "My father was Arthur Foster. He was a gambler. He took fifty thousand dollars from loan sharks three years ago and drank himself to death last winter! They told me the interest doubled. They told me if I paid three thousand tonight, they’d give me another month. I had no money! I was fired three weeks ago! I answered an ad online from an agency called Velvet Touch!"

Dante poured amber liquid into his crystal glass, unhurried. "Velvet Touch is an escort front operated by the Russo family. Rivals of mine." He took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving her face. "A Russo agency sends an untrained, trembling girl directly into my private residence on the exact night I returned from Sicily unannounced. Do you take me for an idiot, Emily?"

"How do you know my name?" she gasped.

He gestured faintly with his glass toward the phone on the table. "Incoming message. *Emily, where are you? The guy is banging on my dorm door.*"

Emily felt all the blood drain from her face. "No. No, no, no!"

She lunged for the coffee table, forgetting her nudity, forgetting the towering mafia kingpin, forgetting everything except the image of Lily huddled behind a thin wooden door in Washington Square.

Before her fingers could touch the glass, an iron grip clamped around her wrist. Dante pulled her back with effortless power, spinning her around until her back slammed softly against his broad chest. His arm banded around her waist, locking her in place. The scent of him enveloped her—bergamot, expensive smoke, and cold steel.

"Let me go!" she sobbed, clawing at his forearm. It was like scratching marble. "Please! He's going to hurt her! Take whatever you want from me! Kill me! Just send someone to save my sister!"

"Stop screaming," Dante ordered, his lips brushing against her temple as he held her firmly. His voice held the absolute authority of a sovereign. "Look at the phone."

Emily froze, tears blurring her vision.

The screen lit up again. Dante’s thumb had sent a single outbound message from his own phone resting on the arm of his leather chair.

On Emily's phone, an alert popped up. A video call request.

Dante reached out with his free hand, keeping Emily pinned against his chest, and tapped the green icon.

The screen flickered. Instead of Lily crying, the camera showed the dingy hallway outside Lily's dormitory. On the floor lay a burly man in a leather jacket, groaning, his nose clearly broken, pinned beneath the polished oxford shoe of a man in a tailored charcoal suit.

"Boss," the man on screen said, speaking into his earpiece. "Gallo's dog was outside the room. We neutralized him. The sister is safe inside. Door is locked."

Emily went limp in Dante's arms. Her legs gave out completely. Had Dante not been holding her waist, she would have collapsed onto the floor.

"Secure the perimeter, Cassian," Dante said smoothly, looking over Emily's trembling shoulder at the screen. "Bring the girl to the safehouse on 72nd. Treat her gently, but do not let her leave."

"Understood, Don Moretti."

The screen went black.

Emily hung in Dante’s grip, shuddering, tears streaming hot and fast down her cheeks. Relief hit her with such violent force that she couldn't breathe.

"She's safe," Emily whispered, her forehead resting against Dante's lapel. "She's really safe?"

Dante loosened his grip, allowing her to turn around. He looked down at her with an expression that was dark, unreadable, and intensely possessive.

"She is safe because I willed it," Dante said softly, his fingers reaching out to brush a wet strand of red hair behind her ear. His touch sent an unexpected jolt of electricity dancing along her skin. "Your sister's life was bought and paid for thirty seconds ago. Which means, Emily Foster..."

He tilted her chin up, forcing her wide green eyes to meet his piercing gaze.

"You now belong entirely to me."
