Chapter 2 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

The sun rose over the New York skyline, cutting through the shattered gray storm clouds and casting a blade of golden light across the master suite of the Obsidian Tower.

Emily sat on the edge of a king-sized bed swathed in Egyptian cotton. She was no longer wearing the soaked trench coat or the humiliating lace lingerie. In their place, she wore an oversized cashmere sweater and tailored trousers that Dante’s housekeeper, a silent woman named Martha, had delivered at dawn without a word.

Emily hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the deadbolt clicking shut, felt Dante’s iron arm around her ribs, and remembered his parting words from five hours earlier: *You now belong entirely to me.*

The heavy oak doors of the bedroom swung open.

Dante stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh white dress shirt, the top two buttons undone, revealing the hollow of his throat, and dark trousers that accentuated his lean, athletic build. In his hand, he held a sleek leather folder.

"Eat," he said, gesturing to the silver tray of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and black coffee Martha had placed on the table earlier.

"I’m not hungry," Emily said, her voice hoarse. "I want to see Lily."

"You will see her when I decide you may see her," Dante replied calmly. He pulled out a chair opposite her, sat down, and placed the leather folder between them. "Right now, you are going to listen."

Emily stiffened. "I don't have anything to give you, Mr. Moretti. I don't have fifty thousand dollars. I don't have fifty dollars. If you saved Lily just to extort me, you wasted your time."

A thin, mocking smile touched Dante's lips. "Do I look like a loan shark running nickel-and-dime scams in Queens, Emily? Fifty thousand dollars is the cost of the watch on my wrist."

"Then what do you want?"

"Velvet Touch," Dante said, his smile vanishing, replaced by a cold, predatory focus. "The agency you answered an ad for. It is run by a man named Lucian Russo. For six months, Russo has been attempting to infiltrate my inner circle. He has planted listeners in my clubs, bribed my logistics managers, and tried three times to put an operative into my bed."

Emily blinked, confusion cutting through her fear. "You think... you think they sent me to spy on you?"

"I know they didn't," Dante said bluntly. "You are an atrocious liar. Your pulse jumped to one-forty the moment I locked that door. You wept like an innocent child when my man took down the collector. A Russo operative would have had a ceramic blade hidden in her boot and poison under her acrylics."

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, closing the distance between them until Emily could see the flecks of gold in his dark irises.

"You were a mistake," Dante murmured. "A clerical error by a sloppy pimp who gave you the wrong penthouse number. You were meant for a mid-level banker three floors below us."

"Then let me go," Emily pleaded, leaning back slightly, unnerved by his proximity. "If I was just an accident, why keep me?"

"Because your arrival is an opportunity." Dante tapped the leather folder. "Lucian Russo knows an escort was dispatched to this tower last night. His men saw my guards secure your sister this morning. Right now, the underworld believes that Arthur Foster’s eldest daughter is under the personal protection of Don Moretti."

"Why would you want them to think that?"

"Because on Saturday night, the five families of New York are gathering for the annual Solstice Gala at the Plaza Hotel," Dante explained, his eyes locking onto hers with lethal intensity. "Russo intends to introduce a new alliance. He wants to project absolute strength. I intend to humiliate him. And to do that, I need a woman on my arm who cannot be bought by him."

Emily stared at him in disbelief. "You want me to pretend to be your girlfriend?"

"Not my girlfriend," Dante corrected smoothly. "My fiancée."

The word hung in the quiet room like a dropped grenade.

"Are you insane?" Emily gasped. "I'm a temp worker! I wore a twenty-dollar trench coat to a mafia don's apartment! I don't know how to act like your fiancée! Those people will tear me to pieces!"

"They will not touch a single hair on your head," Dante said, his voice dropping into that chilling register of absolute certainty. "Because if they do, I will burn their empires to ash."

He slid the folder toward her and flipped it open. Inside was a contract, dense with legal text, accompanied by two cashier's checks.

Emily glanced at the figures and felt the room spin.

The first check was made out to the 'Ndrangheta debt consolidation fund: *$150,000. PAID IN FULL.*

The second check was made out to Emily Foster: *$500,000.*

"The first check clears your father's debt forever," Dante said, watching her face closely. "Salvatore Gallo will sign a binding release of liability before noon today. He will never approach Lily again. The second check is your compensation. Five hundred thousand dollars. Deposited into an offshore account the moment the gala concludes."

Emily’s hands shook as she hovered over the paper. Half a million dollars. Freedom. A college education for Lily. A house somewhere far away from dark alleys and cracked phone screens.

"And if I refuse?" Emily whispered, looking up into his dark eyes.

Dante did not flinch. "I am not a monster, Emily. I will not hand your sister back to Gallo. But I will withdraw my guards. You will be left to pay your father's debt on your own terms. Do you think you can dance at enough bachelor parties to save her before Gallo loses his patience?"

The cruelty of the truth struck her like a slap. He wasn't forcing her with a gun; he was forcing her with reality.

"What do I have to do?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

Dante stood up, towering over her once more. His eyes held a triumphant, dark glint.

"For the next four days, you will obey my every command," Dante said. "You will eat what I tell you, wear what I buy you, and learn to walk beside me like a queen. And when Saturday comes, you will convince the most ruthless killers in North America that you love me enough to die for me."

He extended his right hand toward her.

Emily looked at his broad palm, at the heavy signet ring bearing the Moretti crest—a roaring lion crowned in thorns. She took a shuddering breath, reached out, and placed her small, trembling hand into his.

Dante’s fingers closed tightly around hers, sealing the pact.

"Good girl," he murmured, his thumb stroking across the back of her hand in a gesture that was entirely too intimate. "Now, let us begin your transformation."
