Chapter 9 - The Private Victory

By 6:00 PM, the forty-second floor was completely empty.

The corporate storm had passed, leaving in its wake a stillness so profound it felt almost sacred. The hostile takeover was dead. Vanguard had pulled out of negotiations by mid-afternoon, realizing they had been completely outmaneuvered. Marcus Vance had submitted his immediate resignation by 4:00 PM, citing "personal career realignment" before he could be fired with cause.

Natalie sat at her desk, staring down at the vintage diamond ring on her finger. It still felt surreal. Everything had changed in less than seventy-two hours. Her career, her life, her future.

The private elevator pinged.

Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Natalie looked up. Ethan walked out of his corner office. He had discarded his suit jacket, his tie was loosened, and the sleeves of his white dress shirt were rolled up to his forearms.

He didn't go to his office. He walked straight to her cubicle, leaning against the partition and looking down at her with a soft, exhausted, utterly genuine smile.

"Are you still employed?" he teased quietly.

Natalie smiled, standing up from her chair. "Barely. My boss is a tyrant who makes me work seventy-hour weeks and forces me into fake corporate engagements."

Ethan chuckled, closing the small distance between them. He reached out, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest.

"It wasn't fake," he murmured against her hair. "Not for a single second."

Natalie wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of cedar and mint. "You really risked everything. The company, the board, your entire career... just for me?"

"I built this company from the ground up," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a fierce, quiet intensity as he pulled back to look into her eyes. "I thought building an empire was everything that mattered. But I was wrong, Natalie. Without you, none of it meant a damn thing."

He cupped her face with both hands, his thumbs gently tracing her cheekbones.

"So," Ethan whispered, a small, hopeful smile touching his lips. "Since we're officially engaged according to corporate compliance... do you think you could clear my calendar for this weekend? I hear Lake Michigan is beautiful in October, and I’d like to take my fiancée away for a very long time."

Natalie laughed softly, leaning up to meet his lips. "Mr. Coleman, your calendar is entirely at my command."

May you like

And as his mouth crashed down onto hers—not with the desperate, frantic urgency of a forbidden night in the dark, but with the deep, unshakeable certainty of a future they had fought to build together—Natalie knew she had finally won the best prize of all.
