Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

The door of the conference room clicked shut behind Marcus Vance and Sarah Jenkins, leaving Natalie and Ethan alone in the cavernous silence.
Natalie hadn't moved. Her hands were still flat against the polished mahogany table, her knuckles white. The adrenaline was draining out of her body, leaving behind a cold, shaking exhaustion.
"You lied," she whispered, her voice cracking.
Ethan didn't answer immediately. He stood up slowly from his chair, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the gray expanse of Lake Michigan, and stared out at the gathering storm clouds.
"I protected the company," Ethan said quietly.
"You protected *yourself*." Natalie stood up, her anger finally overriding her fear. The injustice of it all rushed to the surface, hot and stinging. "You made it look like nothing happened. Like I’m just some clumsy assistant who tripped over a box and ruined your expensive designer shirt while doing overtime!"
Ethan turned around. His jaw was tight. "What did you want me to do, Natalie? Tell them the truth? Broadcast to the entire board that the CEO slept with his operations assistant the night before a hostile takeover vote?"
"No! But you didn't have to treat me like a piece of garbage!" Her voice broke, a hot tear spilling over her lashes before she could stop it. "You looked at me out there like... like you didn't even know me. Like Sunday night never happened."
Ethan closed the distance between them in three long strides.
Before she could step back, his hand shot out, his fingers catching her chin and tilting her face up. His touch wasn't gentle, but it wasn't cruel either—it was desperate. The same desperation she had felt in the dark of her apartment before he had received that emergency call.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice rough. "Do you really think I can forget Sunday night?"
Natalie stared up into his dark, storm-gray eyes. "Then why did you act like that?"
"Because Marcus is looking for any excuse to tear me down," Ethan ground out, his thumb brushing away the tear on her cheek. "If he knew how much you actually meant to me—if he knew you weren't just a convenient mistake, but the only real thing in my life—he would use you to destroy me. And I won't let him touch you."
Natalie’s breath hitched. *The only real thing in my life.*
"Ethan..."
Before she could say another word, the conference room door flew open.
Claire burst into the room, panting heavily, brandishing a heavy metal stapler like a weapon. "I heard shouting! Are we fighting? Do I need to staple Marcus Vance’s forehead to a filing cabinet?!"
Ethan slowly dropped his hand from Natalie’s chin, stepping back with effortless CEO composure as if he hadn't just been holding her face like she was his entire world.
Claire froze, her eyes darting between Ethan Coleman—the most feared billionaire executive in Chicago—and Natalie’s flushed, tear-stained face.

"Oh," Claire blinked, lowering the stapler. "Interruption. I’ll... I'll just wait outside."
