Chapter 9 - The Final Echo

Naomi stared at the email for a long moment before tapping it open.

It wasn't from Trevor—he was locked away in a federal penitentiary with no internet access. It was a message forwarded by her old neighbor in Charlotte, Mrs. Gable, who lived across the street from the Myers Park house.

*“Dear Naomi,”* the message read. *“I know you’ve moved on and started fresh in Charleston, and I’m so proud of you. But I thought you should know—the house sold last week. A young family moved in yesterday with two little girls and a golden retriever. They painted the front door a bright, cheerful yellow. All the lingering shadows of the past are completely gone now. The house has finally found peace, and I hope you have too.”*

Attached was a single photograph of the house.

The dark, ominous brick exterior now looked warm and inviting under the afternoon sun. The front door, once a symbol of betrayal where Trevor had plotted her demise, was now painted a brilliant daffodil yellow.

Naomi felt a lump form in her throat, not of sadness, but of profound, cleansing release.

She stood up from her rocking chair, walked to the edge of the porch, and took a deep breath of the salty Charleston air. The nightmare was officially over. The past had been erased, painted over, and replaced with something beautiful and full of light.

That evening, she celebrated quietly. She poured a glass of crisp white wine, walked down to the beach just three blocks from her new home, and watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and violet.

As she stood there with her bare feet sinking into the cool, damp sand, her phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a text message from Marcus Vance.

*“Case officially closed, Naomi. All remaining liquid assets from the trust have cleared. You are officially 100% independent. Enjoy your new life.”*

Naomi smiled, typed back a simple reply—*“Thank you, Marcus. For everything.”—* and slipped the phone into her pocket.

She turned her back to the ocean and began walking home under the starlit sky, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
