Chapter 2 - The Invitation

Over the next three days, Naomi played her role with terrifying precision. She went to yoga classes with neighborhood friends, posted happy couple photos on Instagram (older ones, carefully filtered), and left the house at expected hours.
Meanwhile, behind closed doors, Marcus Vance’s private investigators dug into Trevor’s life. The reports came back thick with damning evidence: Trevor and Vanessa had been having an affair for over fourteen months. They had joint secret bank accounts in the Cayman Islands. And, most importantly, Trevor had recently consulted with a shady private investigator regarding "accidental death statistics" and pharmaceutical toxicity.
The trap was closing in. But Naomi needed one final piece of the puzzle.
On Friday evening, Trevor walked into the kitchen carrying a bottle of expensive French wine. He looked particularly pleased with himself, whistling a tune as he set the bottle on the counter.
"Hey, honey," Trevor said, wrapping an arm around her waist. "I have a favor to ask. A huge favor."
Naomi turned, keeping her expression neutral, even as her skin crawled at his touch. "What is it, Trev?"
"Remember my business consultant, Vanessa Parker? The one helping me salvage the Henderson portfolio?" Trevor lied smoothly, looking straight into her eyes. "She’s in town this weekend. She’s been working around the clock, and I thought... well, it would only be polite to invite her over for Sunday dinner. Just the three of us. We can talk business and clear the air. You’ll love her once you get to know her."
*Clear the air.* The irony was almost poetic.
Naomi allowed a small hesitation to cross her face—just enough to make it look authentic. "Sunday? Trev, we haven't had a quiet weekend in ages. But... if it’s that important for the company, I suppose it’s fine."
Trevor’s face lit up with triumph. He kissed her forehead—a dry, transactional peck. "You’re the best, Naomi. Truly. I’ll let her know. She’ll be thrilled."
*Thrilled,* Naomi repeated in her mind as he walked away. *Oh, you have no idea.*
That night, Naomi lay awake in the dark, staring at the ceiling fan spinning in slow, hypnotic circles. Trevor slept soundly beside her, breathing deeply, dreaming of his three million dollars, the Bahamas, and freedom. She reached across the mattress, her fingers brushing his arm. He shifted, murmuring something unintelligible in his sleep.
Naomi didn't feel anger anymore. Anger was hot and messy. What she felt was ice. Pure, crystalline, unyielding ice.
On Saturday, she visited a high-end boutique and bought a stunning emerald-green silk dress. It clung to her curves, accentuating her collarbones and giving her the look of a dangerous, exotic predator. When she looked in the dressing room mirror, she didn't see the tired, devoted housewife who had spent fifteen years building a life for a man who wanted her dead.

She saw a widow-in-waiting. Only, she wouldn't be the one in the grave.
