Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Cup

Trevor’s face drained of color in an instant. The charming, confident CEO vanished, replaced by a cornered animal realizing the trap had snapped shut.

"What... what are you talking about?" Trevor stammered, his voice pitching slightly upward.

Naomi didn't answer immediately. She calmly reached down beside her chair and placed a sleek, black leather briefcase on the table. With a sharp click of the latches, she flipped it open.

Inside sat a neatly stacked pile of documents: bank statements from Cayman accounts, transcripts of phone calls, medical consultation records regarding toxicity, and a certified copy of the three-million-dollar life insurance policy with Trevor’s forged signature.

Vanessa pushed her chair back, the legs screeching against the hardwood floor. "Trevor... what is this? You said she didn't know anything!"

Trevor shot Vanessa a venomous glare before turning back to his wife, his expression twisting from shock into naked rage. "You bitch," he hissed, standing up so fast his chair toppled backward. "You’ve been spying on me?"

"No, Trevor," Naomi said, her voice remaining terrifyingly calm as she took another sip of her water. "I haven't been spying. I’ve just been paying attention. You left your office door open on Thursday afternoon. You were laughing so hard with your girlfriend about my impending 'random accident' that you forgot sound carries."

Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag from the back of her chair. "I am leaving. This is insane. Trevor, you deal with your crazy wife!"

"Sit down, Vanessa," a new voice boomed from the front entryway.

Everyone froze.

The front door, which had been left unlocked for the caterer, swung open wider. Marcus Vance stepped into the dining room, flanked by two uniformed police officers and a private investigator holding a high-definition recording device.

Trevor staggered backward, knocking over a crystal wine glass that shattered against the floor. "What is the meaning of this? You’re trespassing! Get out of my house!"

"Mr. Richardson," Marcus Vance said, stepping forward with a stack of legal papers in hand. "I am Marcus Vance. And these officers are here to execute a warrant for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny."

The flashbulbs of social media drama were practically begging to ignite right here—the betrayed wife, the panicked cheating husband, the mistress caught in the crossfire, and the sudden arrival of the law.

"You can't do this!" Trevor screamed, lunging toward Naomi with desperate fury. "You ruined my life! I’ll kill you—!"

Before Trevor could take two steps, the police officers swarmed him, slamming him against the mahogany dining table and pinning his arms behind his back. The sharp *click* of steel handcuffs echoed through the dining room.

Vanessa stood paralyzed, her hands trembling as the officers stepped toward her as well. "I didn't do anything! I just wanted the money, I didn't plan it!"

"Co-conspirator," one officer muttered, grabbing her arm and reading her rights.

Naomi remained seated at the head of the table. She looked down at her plate of prime rib, then up at Trevor as he was dragged toward the front door, shouting profanities, his face contorted in sheer agony and disbelief.

As they hauled him past her, Naomi spoke just loud enough for him to hear.

"Have a nice trip to the Bahamas, Trev," she whispered. "Don't forget to write."
