Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Sunday arrived with a heavy, oppressive heat typical of late spring in the Carolinas.

Naomi spent the morning preparing a feast. She slow-roasted a prime rib with rosemary and garlic, whipped buttery potatoes, and baked a rich chocolate tart for dessert. The house smelled of savory herbs and sweet indulgence—a warm, domestic illusion that masked the venom festering underneath.

At 5:00 PM sharp, the doorbell chimed.

Trevor, dressed in a sharp blazer and open-collared shirt, hurried to the front door. "Ah, Vanessa! Right on time. Come in, come in."

Naomi stood at the end of the hallway, a glass of sparkling water in her hand, watching the scene unfold.

Vanessa Parker stepped into the foyer. She was tall, blonde, and wearing a designer cream dress that cost more than a month’s rent. Her face was a masterclass in calculated elegance. As she spotted Naomi, a flash of surprise crossed Vanessa's eyes, quickly masked by a polished, corporate smile.

"Naomi! It is so wonderful to finally meet you," Vanessa said, extending a hand. "Trevor talks about you all the time."

*He talks about my death all the time,* Naomi thought, stepping forward and taking Vanessa’s hand. Her grip was firm, almost crushing. Vanessa’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second before recovering.

"Only good things, I hope," Naomi said smoothly, her voice a melodic purr. "Welcome to our home, Vanessa. Please, make yourself at home."

Over dinner, the conversation flowed with terrifying smoothness. Trevor was in high spirits, drinking deeply from the wine Naomi had poured. Vanessa played her part as the brilliant, supportive colleague, hanging onto Trevor’s every word, offering professional insights that sounded rehearsed.

"So, Vanessa," Naomi said smoothly, cutting a piece of prime rib as she maintained unbroken eye contact with the other woman. "Trevor tells me you two spend a tremendous amount of time working on strategy. Late nights, weekend getaways, financial planning... it must be exhausting."

Vanessa’s fork scraped against her plate with a sharp *clink*. "Well, business doesn't sleep, Naomi. Especially when millions of dollars are on the line."

"Indeed," Naomi agreed, taking a slow sip of her water. "Millions of dollars can change a person. It makes them dream big. Sometimes, it makes them dream of things they never thought possible."

Trevor laughed, though it sounded slightly forced. "Naomi has a flair for the dramatic, Vanessa. She used to write short stories in college."

"Did I?" Naomi tilted her head, her gaze shifting to her husband. "People change, Trev. Sometimes we learn that the people we trust the most are the ones holding the knife behind our backs."

The table fell dead silent. The air grew thick, suffocating.

Vanessa looked at Trevor, her eyes darting with sudden anxiety. Trevor cleared his throat, setting his napkin down with a sharp motion. "Naomi. That’s enough wine for you tonight. You’re starting to talk nonsense."

"Am I?" Naomi asked softly. She didn't blink. "Let's talk about insurance, then. Since we're sharing business secrets."
