Chapter 9 - Penny’s Discovery

The two hired thugs were locked securely in the stone root cellar under old Caleb’s watchful eye and double-barreled shotgun. The small hay fire in the barn was smothered with snow before it could catch the pine rafters, but the adrenaline still pulsed hot in Sarah’s veins as she and Garrett returned to the main house.

Penny was waiting faithfully beneath the heavy dining table, but when her mother knelt to pull her out into a fierce embrace, the little girl was clutching a dust-covered leather satchel.

"Mama," Penny whispered, her little blue eyes bright with innocent triumph. "I heard a loose board when I crawled underneath the big desk. It squeaked, so I pulled it. Look what was inside."

Garrett froze in the doorway, staring at the satchel. The cracked brown leather was embossed with his late father’s initials: *A. T.*—Arthur Thorne.

"My father’s personal safe box," Garrett whispered, stepping forward with reverent disbelief. "He hid this before he collapsed of the fever three years ago. We searched this entire house for months and never found where he kept his private ledgers."

Garrett knelt beside Sarah and Penny on the wooden floorboards, his scarred hands trembling slightly as he unbuckled the brass straps. Inside lay a bundle of faded letters, a stack of gold certificates, and an official leather-bound ledger labeled *County Land Assessment & Tax Registry - 1882*.

Sarah watched as Garrett rapidly flipped through the yellowed pages of the ledger. His eyes widened, and a sharp intake of breath hissed through his teeth.

"Sarah... look at this," Garrett breathed, pointing a calloused finger at a series of notarized receipts and bank deposits.

Sarah leaned close, her eyes tracing the neat, ledger entries. "These are payments made to Silas Vance... ten thousand dollars. From your father?"

"No," Garrett said, his voice rising in fierce, vindicated fury. "These are records of Silas Vance embezzling funds from the county treasury into Clara’s dummy investment trust! My father discovered the fraud before he died. He was blackmailing them into keeping the Thorne Estate’s taxes at zero. When my father died, Clara and Vance manufactured the fake unpaid mortgage to bankrupt me and steal the land before anyone found these books!"

Sarah grasped Garrett’s arm, her heart hammering with revelation. "This isn't just about saving your home, Garrett. This ledger contains enough evidence to send Clara Vanderhoof and Silas Vance to the territorial penitentiary for twenty years."
