Chapter 10 - The Town Hall Confrontation

The clock on the mantle struck nine on Friday morning. The winter sun reflected blindingly off the fresh drifts outside, but inside the county courthouse in the center of town, the air was thick with tension, tobacco smoke, and whispers.
Silas Vance sat behind the elevated magistrate’s desk, flanked by two armed town marshals he had bought with Vanderhoof gold. In the front row of the wooden gallery sat Clara Vanderhoof, dressed in mourning silk, looking as regal and untouchable as an empress holding court over her subjects. Half the town had gathered, drawn by the rumor that Garrett Thorne was finally going to be stripped of his historic land.
"Case number forty-two," Silas Vance announced in a pompous, echoing voice, pounding his wooden gavel onto the bench. "Foreclosure and forfeiture of the Thorne Homestead to the Vanderhoof Financial Trust. Whereas the defendant, Garrett Thorne, has failed to appear—"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom slammed open with a concussive boom that rattled the frosted glass panes.
Every head in the room whipped around.
Walking down the center aisle, in perfect, unbroken rhythm, was Garrett Thorne. His back was straighter than anyone had seen it in four years, his chin held high, wearing his decorated officer’s coat. On his arm walked Sarah, radiant and unflinching, holding little Penny by the hand. Behind them walked Preacher Adams and two federal marshals who had accompanied the morning rail line from Cheyenne.
A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Clara Vanderhoof stiffened in her seat, her fan freezing mid-flutter.
"The defendant is present, Silas," Garrett’s voice boomed through the high ceiling, cutting through the murmurs like thunder. "And we are here to settle the debt once and for all."
Silas scrambled to his feet behind the bench, his face mottling with dark red fury. "This court has already ruled! You are trespassing on municipal proceedings! Marshals, remove this man and his squatter from my courtroom immediately!"
"Don't touch a damn one of them!" a deep, commanding voice barked from the back of the aisle.

One of the men accompanying Preacher Adams stepped forward, flashing a polished silver star pinned to his lapel—Federal Marshal Roy Gallagher. "Sit down, Silas. You don't have jurisdiction here anymore."
