Chapter 6 - Blood on the Threshold

Dawn broke over the Thorne valley not with warmth, but with a pale, icy glare that painted the snowfields in shades of ash and slate.

Sarah was standing in the kitchen, carefully setting a pot of steaming black coffee over the stove, when the rhythmic thud of multiple horses broke the morning silence. She walked quickly to the parlor window, parting the heavy curtain. Three black carriages, escorted by five mounted men with rifles slung over their saddles, had formed a semi-circle across the courtyard.

Garrett came down the wooden staircase, his rifle held loosely across his forearm. His face was unreadable, carved from stone, but the fierce fire in his eyes told Sarah everything she needed to know.

"Take Penny upstairs, Sarah," Garrett said quietly.

"No," Sarah said, picking up an iron poker from beside the fireplace and setting her shoulders back. "I am the mistress of this house now. I will not hide in the attic like a frightened rabbit while thieves stand on my porch."

Garrett looked at her, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "God help the man who crosses you, Mrs. Thorne."

The heavy front door was kicked from the outside. Garrett stepped forward and yanked it open before the wood could be struck again.

Standing on the threshold was Silas Vance, dressed in a tailored beaver-fur coat, flanked by County Deputy Higgins and a grim-faced clerk clutching a black leather ledger. Behind them, stepping delicately out of a lacquered carriage with her silver-tipped cane, was Clara Vanderhoof, a cruel, triumphant smirk plastered across her powdered face.

"Good morning, nephew," Clara purred, her voice dripping with artificial pity. "A bitter day for an eviction, isn't it? But business does not wait on the weather."

Silas Vance pulled an official writ from his coat. "Garrett Thorne, by order of the Territorial Magistrate, you have failed to clear the mortgage lien. This property and all livestock are hereby forfeit to the Vanderhoof Trust. You have one hour to vacate the premises on foot."

Garrett didn't move an inch. He leaned casually against the doorframe, his thumb resting lightly on the hammer of his Winchester rifle. "You're trespassing, Silas. And Clara... you're trespassing on private land."

"You arrogant fool!" Silas barked, stepping onto the porch. "You have no legal standing! The court declared you solitary, unfit, and without an heir to satisfy the homestead covenant!"

"Solitary?" Sarah’s clear, resonant voice cut through the freezing air like a whip. She stepped out onto the porch, standing shoulder to shoulder with Garrett, holding out the stamped, wax-sealed certificate of marriage signed by Preacher Adams and witnessed by the courier of the Territorial Governor. "Look closely, Mr. Vance. My husband is neither solitary nor unfit. And as of midnight, this estate belongs to the Thorne family jointly. Under federal law, no summary seizure can take place against a married homesteader without a full thirty-day hearing in Cheyenne."

Silas Vance froze, his face draining of color as his eyes locked onto the fresh seals of the document.
