Chapter 12 - Unmasking the Serpent
Silas screamed in agony as Garrett wrenched the firearm from his grasp and pinned the trembling magistrate facedown on his own desk. Marshal Gallagher had his sidearm drawn instantly, covering Clara Vanderhoof, while the two local deputies stood paralyzed in shock.
"Check the safe in his back office," Sarah commanded the federal marshal, her eyes blazing. "In the hidden drawer behind the county charter, you will find the duplicate land deeds Clara prepared for the Union Pacific Railroad, signed two days before this foreclosure notice was even issued."
Marshal Gallagher signaled his partner, who strode through the side door into Vance’s private office. A moment later, the agent returned carrying a thick bundle of red-ribboned contracts stamped with the railroad corporation’s official seal.
"It’s all here, Roy," the agent announced, holding the documents high for the entire room to see. "Contracts, railroad kickbacks, and an unregistered payment of fifteen thousand dollars made directly to Mrs. Clara Vanderhoof."
A roar of righteous fury erupted from the spectators in the gallery. Neighbors who had lost their farms to Silas Vance’s predatory loans stood up, shouting curses and demanding justice.
Clara Vanderhoof swayed on her feet, her pale face suddenly looking ancient, hollow, and decrepit. The imperial facade she had worn for years was stripped away in front of the very people she had terrorized.
"You ruined me..." Clara hissed, pointing a trembling, wrinkled finger at Sarah, tears of pure venom spilling down her powdered cheeks. "You ruined everything, you filthy little beggar!"
"No, Clara," Sarah said softly, walking over until she stood just inches away from the trembling aristocrat. "You ruined yourself the moment you mistook Garrett’s silence for weakness, and my desperation for fear. Take her, Marshal."
Marshal Gallagher stepped forward and clicked the heavy iron cuffs around Clara’s wrists. Silas Vance was dragged from behind the bench in chains, whimpering and begging for mercy as the crowd jeered and cheered.

Garrett stepped down from the raised platform, his eyes fixed only on Sarah. He caught her in his arms, lifting her off her feet as the entire courtroom erupted into thunderous applause. Penny ran to their legs, wrapping her arms around them both, burying her happy face in her mother's skirt.
