Chapter 9 - The Unraveling of Mark

Lily’s desperate threat wasn't entirely empty. Mark Vance was a cornered animal, and cornered animals always lash out in the dirtiest ways possible.

At eight o’clock that evening, an encrypted email arrived in my private inbox from Mark’s personal account.

Attached were dozens of private photographs and medical records from four years ago—dating back to when I had suffered severe clinical burnout and depression while rescuing our father’s first failing company. Among them were private journal entries, vulnerable texts, and distorted photos taken while I was sleeping in a hospital bed.

The text in the email was curt, vicious, and reeking of desperation:

*Fifty million dollars wire transfer to Apex Horizons by tomorrow noon, or every major media outlet in the country gets these medical files and private photos. Let’s see what the Wall Street board thinks of their new Managing Partner when they find out she spent three months in a psychiatric ward for nervous exhaustion. You have sixteen hours, Grace. Don't test me.*

I stared at the screen, a suffocating weight pressing down on my chest for a fleeting moment. That period of my life had been a nightmare—a dark pit of exhaustion where I had nearly given up everything to keep my family afloat, only for them to weaponize my lowest moment against me.

Before panic could take root, my office door clicked open. Julian walked in carrying two takeout containers from a high-end sushi restaurant.

"You're working late," Julian remarked, setting the food on the coffee table. Then he stopped, noticing my pale complexion and the rigid way I held my shoulders. "What did he do?"

Without a word, I turned the laptop screen toward him.

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, lethal slits as he skimmed through the extortion demands. A chilling, predatory aura filled the entire room, so cold that the air seemed to drop several degrees.

"He kept these?" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. "He hacked your private medical cloud when you were recovering at his apartment."

"He's asking for fifty million," I said, my voice shaking slightly despite my efforts to control it. "If this leaks... the SEC regulatory committee will pause my appointment as Managing Partner. Investors will question my mental stability."

Julian took out his phone immediately and tapped a speed-dial contact.

"Frank," Julian spoke into the receiver, his tone entirely devoid of emotion. "Deploy the audit team to Mark's private penthouse on 5th Avenue right now. Bring the private security detail. Notify the District Attorney's office that we are filing formal charges under Federal Title 18, Section 873—blackmail and extortion across state lines. And bring the server logs from Sovereign Trust."

"Julian," I said, stepping forward. "He might hit 'send' to the tabloids before your people even arrive."

Julian hung up and walked directly over to me. He stood just inches away, his dark eyes fierce with unwavering resolve. He gently placed his hands on my shoulders, his grip warm and remarkably steady.

"He won't hit send, Grace," Julian said softly. "Because Mark doesn't know that three hours ago, his domestic partner in crime—your father—signed a confession implicating Mark in the fraud in exchange for a lighter sentence. Mark has no leverage. He only has a noose around his neck."
