Chapter 10 - The Mother's Betrayal Confirmed

While Mark was scrambling against Julian's legal juggernaut, my mother finally broke her silence.

My mother, Eleanor Sterling, was a woman who had spent forty years maintaining the pristine illusion of upper-class nobility. She never raised her voice; she never showed public anger. She simply glided through charity galas, wearing pearl necklaces and dictating who was worthy of polite society.

At ten that night, she arrived at my corporate penthouse in Tribeca.

I let her in, not out of affection, but to close the final door of my past.

She stood in the center of the minimalist living room, wrapped in a chinchilla fur coat, looking around the expansive skyline view with a look of subtle, condescending appraisal.

"You've always had a cold taste in decor, Grace," she said softly, slipping her gloves off. "Just like your grandmother. Efficient, but devoid of warmth."

"Why are you here, Eleanor?" I asked, leaning against the kitchen island, intentionally refusing to call her *Mother*.

Eleanor’s lips tightened slightly at the address, but she maintained her graceful posture. "Your father is having cardiac arrhythmias under house arrest. The feds are going through our personal safe as we speak. And your sister... your poor sister is confined to bed, sobbing uncontrollably."

"And?"

"And you need to drop the charges against your father," Eleanor said smoothly, as if asking for a cup of Earl Grey. "Sign over the European rights back to the family trust, and give Lily fifty percent of your liquid holdings in Sovereign Trust."

I almost laughed out loud at the sheer, unadulterated absurdity of it. "Give Lily half my assets? After she threw wine at me and slept with my fiancé?"

Eleanor sighed, shaking her head as if dealing with an unreasonable child. "Grace, you are strong. You have always been capable of surviving anything. You don't need the family's money; you can make more tomorrow. But Lily... Lily is fragile. She cannot survive poverty. And besides..."

Eleanor paused, stepping closer, dropping her voice to a manipulative whisper. "...Lily is pregnant with Mark's child."

The room went deathly silent.

A cruel, twisted revelation hung in the air.

"She took a test this morning," Eleanor continued, watching my face for a reaction. "She is carrying your future niece or nephew. Will you really throw your own flesh and blood onto the street, Grace? Will you let a child suffer because of your bruised pride?"

I looked at the woman who had birthed me, and for the first time in my life, I saw her clearly. She wasn't a mother. She was a curator of convenience, a parasite who fed on my labor to nourish the golden idol of her favored child.

"Pride?" I whispered, walking slowly toward the front door and opening it wide to the corridor. "Eleanor, pride died when I left that chapel. What is left here is justice."

"Grace—"

"If Lily is pregnant, then she should learn to work for a living, just as I did," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "Because she will not see a single cent of my grandmother's fortune. Neither will you. Neither will Father."

Eleanor's aristocratic mask finally slipped, her face contorting with ugly, venomous hatred. "You heartless monster! You were always jealous of Lily! From the day she was born, you looked at her with hatred! You will die alone in this cold glass tower, Grace! Mark never loved you, and neither did we!"

"I know," I answered, looking directly into her eyes with chilling serenity. "And that is why losing you costs me absolutely nothing."

I shut the door in her face and locked the deadbolt.
