Chapter 6 - Public Ruin, Private Coldness

By six in the morning, the bridal incident had migrated from whispering society circles to the ruthless arena of the internet.

I was sitting in the leather armchair of Julian’s Gulfstream jet as it cruised smoothly at forty thousand feet. Across from me, Julian sat with his sleeves rolled up, dark hair neatly combed, reviewing quarterly reports on his tablet as if we weren’t currently in the middle of a nuclear family war.

My phone chimed non-stop.

Lily had done exactly what I knew she would do: she went on social media.

A video had been uploaded to her Instagram account, which boasted half a million followers. In it, she was sitting in our family living room, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater, her eyes artfully rimmed with red tears. Mark sat beside her, looking solemn, holding her delicate, trembling hand.

*"I never wanted to speak publicly about family matters,"* Lily wept softly to the camera, dabbing a tissue at the corner of her eye. *"But the rumors are tearing my heart apart. The truth is... Mark and I fell in love months ago, but we tried to suppress it out of respect for my older sister. Grace has always been deeply controlling, emotionally distant, and focused entirely on corporate power. Mark was miserable, trapped in an arrangement orchestrated by business contracts. When I tried to tell her the truth at the wedding, she attacked me verbally and threw wine over herself to frame me. She abandoned our family, took the company accounts, and vanished."*

The comments underneath were already pouring in by the thousands:

*— "Grace has always looked so cold and arrogant in society photos."*

*— "Poor Lily, she’s so fragile. True love shouldn't be sacrificed for an arranged merger!"*

*— "Cancel Grace Sterling! How could an older sister be so abusive?"*

I watched the screen in silence, not a single ripple of emotion showing on my face. My heart had stopped bleeding hours ago; now, it was pure obsidian.

Julian glanced up from his tablet, taking a sip of black espresso. "Standard PR playbook for a narcissist. Deflect, play the innocent martyr, weaponize public sympathy before the other side speaks."

"She thinks she's untouchable because our parents always protected her," I said quietly, setting the phone down on the mahogany table. "Every time she broke something of mine as a child, my mother told me to forgive her because she was 'delicate.' Every time she stole my boyfriends, my father laughed and called her a spirited charmer."

"And what are you going to do?" Julian asked, his dark eyes fixed on mine with genuine curiosity. "Issue a statement?"

"No," I replied, leaning back. "Statements are for people who need to defend themselves. I don't defend. I reveal."

I pulled out my secondary thumb drive—the one containing the raw 4K security footage from the mansion's private conservatory, timestamped three nights before the wedding.

It showed Lily and Mark laughing hysterically as they planned the champagne stunt, explicitly stating: *"If we push her hard enough to cause a scene, Dad can claim she's mentally unstable and take over her trust before the board votes on Monday."*

"Send it to the top three financial journalists and society tabloids simultaneously at 9:00 AM," I told Julian. "Right when the New York Stock Exchange opens."

Julian smiled—a slow, dangerous smirk that matched my own. "Ruthless. I like it."
