Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 9:30 AM, I walked through the revolving glass doors of the Sterling & Vance Financial Tower in Midtown Manhattan.

I was no longer wearing the stained remnants of a bride. I wore an ivory tailored Saint Laurent power suit, sharp black stilettos, and dark sunglasses that masked the exhaustion behind my eyes. Two executive security guards flanked me as I stepped into the private elevator reserved for board members.

The doors chimed and opened on the 48th floor.

The boardroom was already in utter chaos. A giant projection screen at the end of the long conference table displayed an emergency Zoom call. My father’s face was red with fury, yelling at three senior directors while his secretary frantically handed him ringing landlines.

"I don't care what the Sovereign Trust says!" my father was roaring through the speakers. "Grace does not have the unilateral authority to lock our operating capital! Find her! Where is she?!"

"Right here, Father," I said clearly, stepping into the room.

The boardroom fell dead silent.

Twelve pairs of eyes turned toward the door. The junior executives froze; the veteran directors leaned back in shock.

My father’s image on the screen jerked as he stared at me through his webcam in his estate study. "Grace! What the hell have you done?! You locked the credit facilities! You leaked that disgraceful, out-of-context video to the press! Do you know what’s happening to our stock right now? We’ve lost fifteen percent since opening bell!"

"Twelve percent, actually," Julian Vance’s voice cut in smoothly as he walked into the boardroom right behind me, unbuttoning his jacket and taking the vacant seat at the head of the mahogany table.

My father gasped on screen. "Julian?! What are you doing with my daughter?!"

"Protecting my investment, Richard," Julian replied lazily, resting his forearms on the table. "You see, while you were busy plotting with my idiot brother to steal Grace's inheritance, you forgot one critical contractual clause."

I opened my leather portfolio and slid a thick stack of blue-bound legal dossiers across the polished table to the Chief Operating Officer.

"Three years ago, when the family firm was facing bankruptcy in the European sector, I personally funded the buyout of our foreign patents using my own savings," I stated, my voice echoing with crisp authority. "The contract stated that if the family trust ever attempted an unauthorized seizure of my assets, all international distribution rights, licenses, and intellectual property would revert entirely to me."

The COO quickly flipped through the pages, his complexion turning ghostly pale. "Richard... she's right. The signature on this agreement is irrevocable. It has a poison-pill clause."

"Grace, you wouldn't dare!" my father spat, veins bulging in his neck. "I am your father! I gave you life! I built this empire!"

"You built an empire on my back, and then you gave it to Lily as a plaything," I said coldly, walking up to the screen until my face occupied the center of the camera. "As of ten minutes ago, I transferred all European rights to Julian Vance's holding fund. You don't have an empire anymore, Father. You have a hollow shell drowning in debt."

"Grace, please!" my father's voice cracked, the fury suddenly turning into naked panic. "We can fix this! Lily was just confused—Mark seduced her! We are family!"

"You stopped being my family the moment you put a price tag on my soul," I said, and reached out my hand to hit the red button on the conference console, disconnecting the call in mid-sentence.
