Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the news had officially broken beyond local social media gossip. A prominent investigative tech reporter with over a million followers had published a comprehensive breakdown of Belle's influencer accounts, titled: *The Anatomy of a Medical Grift: How Influencer Belle Vance Exploited Her Sister’s Oncology Ward.*

Screenshots of Belle’s luxury vacations to Tulum and Aspen were juxtaposed with timestamps of my second-stage radiation sessions. The contrast was devastating. Commentators were picking apart every receipt, every branded post, and every tearful selfie she had ever uploaded.

I spent the midday hours inside Marcus’s office downtown, signing formal affidavits, providing thumbprints for identity verification, and reviewing my official oncology charts with his paralegal. We were building an ironclad fortress of truth.

When I finally returned to my apartment building around 5:30 p.m., the evening sky was bruising into a deep violet. I stepped out of the rideshare, pulled my wool coat tightly around my frame, and walked toward the glass front entrance.

A tall figure stepped out from the shadows beside the concierge pillar.

“Elena.”

I recoiled instinctively, gripping the strap of my purse. Standing in front of me was Derek Larson—Belle’s live-in boyfriend and self-proclaimed “creative director.” He was wearing dark designer streetwear and sunglasses pushed up into his slicked-back hair, looking disheveled, erratic, and deeply anxious.

“Derek?” I said, stepping backward toward the illuminated glass doors where the building security guard was visible at the front desk. “What are you doing here? You aren’t allowed on this property.”

“Don’t make a scene, okay? Just listen to me for two minutes,” Derek pleaded, his hands raised in a placating gesture, though his eyes darted nervously down the street. “Belle doesn't know I came here. She’s at her mom’s place completely sedated. Elena, you have to withdraw Marcus’s complaint to the FTC.”

I stared at him with cold amusement. “Withdraw it? Derek, she committed commercial fraud using my name. You were the one holding the camera in my hospital room, weren't you?”

Derek flinched, his jaw tightening. “We had bills to pay! Do you have any idea how expensive Belle’s lifestyle is? If she didn’t look successful, the brands wouldn’t hire her! That’s how the influencer economy works! You don't get views by showing someone sitting in a boring clinic waiting room; you have to package it!”

“You packaged my potential death,” I said, each word dripping with venomous clarity. “You turned my real pain into your production budget. Get away from me before I call building security.”

Derek took a menacing half-step forward, his voice dropping into a harsh, desperate hiss. “Listen to me, you self-righteous bitch. If Belle goes down for wire fraud, she’s not the only one who loses. The lease on our penthouse apartment has your mother listed as the primary guarantor. Did you know that?”

A chill rushed down my spine. “What did you say?”

Derek sneered, sensing he had found a chink in my armor. “Your mother co-signed our six-thousand-dollar-a-month lease last November. If Belle gets indicted and our accounts get seized by the state, the landlord will accelerate the entire annual balance—nearly seventy-five grand—and go directly after your mom’s house. Mom took out an equity line to cover our security deposit, too.”

I felt the ground tilt beneath me. My mother’s modest, two-bedroom suburban home—the house my late father had spent twenty-five years paying off with his union pension—was tied directly to Belle’s vanity apartment.

“You dragged our mother into your financial cesspool?” I whispered, horrified.

“Belle did what she had to do, and your mom went along with it because she actually loves her daughter!” Derek spat. “So you go ahead and play the martyr with your high-priced lawyer, Elena. But if you don’t sign off on a settlement that protects Belle’s LLC, your mom will be sleeping on a cot at a local shelter by Christmas. Think about that before you talk to the feds tomorrow.”

He turned abruptly, pulled his hood over his head, and vanished into the evening crowd down the street.

I stood frozen on the concrete, the cold wind whipping against my cheeks. My hands were shaking again, but not from fear.

May you like

From blinding, uncontrollable fury.
