Chapter 13 - The Knock at Midnight

The autumn evening settled over the city in a cold, dense mist.
By 11:00 p.m., the federal courthouse downtown was locked and dark, but behind the scenes, tectonic plates had shifted. Marcus and Sarah Lin had spent seven uninterrupted hours in a secure briefing room with two assistant U.S. Attorneys. The Cayman Island ledgers had been officially transferred into federal custody, and an emergency seal had been placed on Apex Global Capital’s civil litigation against me.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, I sat in my living room without a legal brief or a medical chart in front of me.
I made a pot of chamomile tea. I turned on soft jazz music. Outside, the steady rhythm of rain tapped gently against the double-paned glass of my window. My body felt grounded. My chest was calm. I had stood my ground against my sister, against my mother’s enablers, and against a multi-million-dollar corporate predator, and I had survived every single blow.
I pulled open my journal, uncapped a pen, and wrote:
*November 24th: The truth does not require volume to conquer lies. It only requires patience and the refusal to break.*
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text message from Marcus:
*“Grand jury has issued three sealed indictments against Julian Vance, Apex executives, and Derek Larson. U.S. Marshals are moving in tonight in Miami. You are completely cleared, Elena. Sleep well.”*
A profound wave of relief washed over me, so sweet and deep that tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I closed the journal, switched off the kitchen lights, and walked toward the hallway to head to bed.
*THUD. THUD. THUD.*
A series of violent, frantic knocks hammered against my apartment door.
I froze in the center of the hallway. The clock on the wall read 12:14 a.m.
*THUD. THUD. THUD.*
The knocking wasn't polite; it was desperate, erratic, accompanied by the muffled sound of labored, panicked breathing on the other side of the heavy wood.
I approached the front door slowly, keeping my footsteps silent. “Who is it?” I called out cautiously, my hand resting near the brass security latch.
There was a ragged sob from the hallway.
“Elena… please open the door!”
It was Belle. But her voice was choked with sheer terror, sounding cracked, breathless, and unrecognizable.
“Belle? What are you doing here? I told you—”
May you like
“Elena, you have to let me in!” Belle screamed through the door, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs as she rattled the door handle desperately. “Derek’s friends… they followed me from Mom’s house! They aren't marshals, Elena! They’re looking for Julian’s ledger—and they think I have it!”
Before I could answer, the sharp, deafening sound of shattering glass echoed from the hallway staircase behind her.
