Chapter 12 - The Healing Truth

The following Monday, I sat opposite Marcus inside the soundproofed boardroom of Vance, Sterling & Cole. Sitting beside us was Sarah Lin, a veteran federal prosecutor turned private white-collar criminal investigator.

On the table between us lay three heavily redacted financial dossiers.

“Apex Global Capital isn't a conventional private equity firm,” Sarah Lin explained, tapping her pen against the files. “They specialize in hostile takeovers of struggling wellness companies facing regulatory crackdowns. Their typical playbook is to initiate crushing lawsuits against whistleblowers and victims to force confidential settlements, which allows them to bury consumer fraud evidence before the Department of Justice intervenes.”

“And Derek Larson?” I asked. “Where does he fit into this?”

Sarah opened the third folder and spun it toward me. It contained a surveillance photograph taken four days ago outside a private marina in Miami. In the picture, Derek was boarding a luxury yacht, laughing alongside a middle-aged man in a tailored linen suit.

“That man beside Derek is Julian Vance,” Sarah said coldly.

I stopped breathing. The name hit me like a physical blow.

“Julian Vance?” I looked at Marcus in complete shock. “Marcus… is that…?”

“My estranged older brother,” Marcus said, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. “The one our father disinherited twenty years ago for embezzling client trust accounts.”

The room seemed to spin. The threads of this entire nightmare weren't random at all.

“Julian is the senior managing partner at Apex Global Capital,” Marcus continued, his eyes burning with a deep, personal fire. “He didn't stumble upon Belle’s social media grift by accident, Elena. When Belle started looking for corporate sponsors last fall, Derek reached out directly to Julian’s intermediary network. Julian supplied the NaturaLife contract to Belle, fully knowing the signature would be forged. He set this entire trap from day one—not just to fleece your donors, but to bait my law firm into representing you, so he could weaponize federal litigation to dismantle my practice.”

I sat back, the sheer scale of the manipulation washing over me.

Belle hadn't just been a reckless, greedy influencer. She had been an unwitting pawn in a vicious family vendetta orchestrated by the darker branch of the Vance family tree.

“So the whole thing,” I whispered, “from the supplement deal to the federal lawsuit… it was all engineered to destroy both of us?”

“Yes,” Marcus said quietly, leaning forward and resting his hands on the table. “Julian underestimated two critical things. First, he underestimated your resolve to stand up for the truth. And second, he didn't realize that before my father died, he left me the master ledger of Julian’s offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

Sarah Lin smiled a sharp, razor-thin smile. “The Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network has been waiting for that master ledger for seven years. If we hand it over tomorrow morning, Julian Vance won’t be filing federal lawsuits against anyone. He’ll be answering a grand jury indictment before sundown.”
