Chapter 11 - The Corporate Retaliation

Two weeks passed. The online fervor around Belle’s scandal gradually began to recede, replaced by the relentless, 24-hour churn of internet pop-culture drama. My health continued to stabilize; my blood work came back with clean margins, and the persistent cough that had plagued me for six months had finally vanished.
I was beginning to believe the nightmare was entirely behind us.
Then, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, Marcus called my cell phone while I was walking across the university campus after my first faculty meeting.
“Elena, where are you?” His voice was unusually sharp, devoid of his usual composed elegance.
“I’m on campus, Marcus. What’s going on?”
“Get to a private location immediately,” he instructed. “NaturaLife Bio-Labs just filed an emergency motion in Federal District Court. They aren’t just coming after Belle anymore. They’ve completely reversed their settlement offer.”
I ducked inside the campus library foyer, leaning against a cold marble pillar. “What are you talking about? You said their legal team was terrified of the forgery!”
“They were, until their board of directors was acquired two days ago by an offshore private equity fund called Apex Global Capital,” Marcus explained quickly, the sound of rustling papers audible through the line. “Apex doesn't care about bad PR. Their business model relies on predatory legal intimidation. They just filed a twenty-million-dollar federal racketeering and trade libel lawsuit against Belle Vance, Derek Larson, *and* you as an alleged co-conspirator.”
“Racketeering?!” I gasped, attracting startled glances from nearby students. “Marcus, I was in a hospital bed! I never met those people!”
“Apex is claiming that the entire scandal—the GoFundMe, Belle’s videos, and your public retraction—was an orchestrated ‘short-and-distort’ scheme designed to tank NaturaLife’s stock valuation right before their corporate merger,” Marcus said, his tone grim. “And to make matters worse, they served an emergency subpoena on the university’s administrative board this morning, demanding all your personal employment and medical leave records.”
My chest tightened, a familiar flare of panic threatening to seize my lungs. “Can they do that? Can they drag my workplace into this?”
“Under federal discovery rules for a civil RICO claim, they can cast an extremely wide net,” Marcus replied. “They’re trying to bankrupt you with legal defense fees so you’ll sign a total gag order and agree to a liability release that shields their executives from FTC prosecution.”
“What do we do?” I demanded, fighting back the rising tide of fear.

“We don’t panic,” Marcus said firmly. “And we don’t hide. I just received a call from an investigative producer at *Dateline*. They’ve been tracking Apex Global Capital’s shell corporations for over eighteen months. If Apex wants to take this to federal court, we give them the trial of the century.”
