Chapter 37 - The Harbor of Stars

That evening, the Vancouver coastline glittered like a diamond necklace against the black velvet of the Pacific. A modest, private gathering of scientists, crew members, and allies filled the aft deck of *The Sovereign Dawn*. There were no corporate investors, no paparazzi, no high-society parasites drinking champagne bought with stolen patents.

Arthur stood near the bow, raising a glass of sparkling water to toast Dr. Lin and the scientific teams who had labored through the darkest hours of the syndicate’s reign.

I stood by the stern railing, watching the city lights slowly recede as the engines hummed to life.

Gordon walked up beside me, holding two crystal glasses. He handed me one, his dark eyes reflecting the warm amber lanterns strung along the deck.

"You look peaceful," he said, his shoulder brushing against mine.

"I am," I smiled, taking a sip. "For the first time in thirty-two years, I don't feel like I’m hiding, running, or apologizing for existing."

"Arthur tells me the Mediterranean research hub is operational," Gordon said softly, leaning his arms against the railing, looking out at the open water. "They want Dr. Elena Vance to serve as the global director of sovereign medicine."

"I told him I’d only take it on one condition," I replied, turning my body toward him.

Gordon arched an eyebrow, a slight, teasing smirk playing at the edge of his lips. "And what condition is that?"

"That my head of global security remains permanently on assignment with me," I said, my voice dropping to a soft, intimate whisper. "No contracts. No corporate oversight. Just you."

Gordon’s smile faded into something breathtakingly intense and profound. He set his glass down on the wooden ledge, took a step closer, and reached out to gently cradle my waist. The distance between us evaporated in the cool night breeze.

"I gave you my loyalty the night we boarded the southern vessel," Gordon murmured, his gaze dipping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes with absolute devotion. "I didn't stay because of Arthur’s mission, Elena. I stayed because I fell in love with a woman who had the strength to shatter empires without ever losing her soul."

My breath caught. "Gordon..."

He leaned down and kissed me.

It was a kiss born from storms, trials, and survival—deep, fierce, and infinitely gentle. The pain of the past seven years dissolved completely in the heat of his embrace. My hands found their way around his neck, my fingers tangling in his dark hair as the ocean rocked gently beneath us.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, we were both breathless, our hearts beating in synchronized triumph.

"Wherever you go, Dr. Vance," Gordon whispered against my skin, "I’m already home."
