Chapter 31 - The Serpent’s Reckoning

Julian’s chest heaved. He looked between me and Gordon, his manic gaze lingering on the weapon Gordon held with casual lethality. Julian let out a jagged, hysterical laugh.
"You think this is funny, Elena? You think you’ve won?" He thrust the briefcase forward, his fingers shaking on the combination dial. "Thorne betrayed me! The moment I gave him the decryption key from the Kitsilano papers, he locked me down here! He took the master vials and left me to rot for the federal marshals!"
"Thorne didn't betray you, Julian," Gordon said coldly. "He evaluated you. And just like Apex did, he realized you have zero intellectual value. You were nothing more than a glorified courier who stole from his own wife."
"She wasn't a wife!" Julian screamed, spit flying from his lips. The arrogance that had once terrified me now looked like nothing more than the pathetic tantrum of a spoiled child. "She was an anchor! I gave you seven years of luxury, Elena! I gave you that house! I gave you the Vance name!"
"My father gave you that name, Julian," I said, stopping three feet from him, looking down into his ruined, trembling face. "You adopted my father's legacy because your own family name was synonymous with failure. You traded on my pedigree, bled my mother's patents dry, and thought you were a god because you sat at the head of a boardroom table while I solved the molecular synthesis equations at our breakfast counter."
Julian swallowed hard, his arrogance faltering before the absolute, unyielding coldness in my eyes. "Elena... please. We were married. We loved each other once. I was under immense pressure... the board was threatening to expose my father's debts... Colette seduced me, she tricked me into the offshore transfers! You know how soft-hearted you are, Elena. You've always forgiven me."
He reached out a trembling hand toward the hem of my coat, his eyes welling with crocodile tears.
I took one step back, my expression completely untouched by his plea. The days of me weeping on the floor while he left for business trips with Colette were gone. That woman had died on the morning the papers hit the counter.
"I didn't come here to forgive you, Julian," I said, pulling the notarized divorce agreement from my pocket and letting it flutter to the floor in front of him. "I came to tell you that the property addendum you stole? It was invalid from the beginning."
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "What?"
"My mother’s biological estate was held in an irrevocable sovereign trust under Arthur Vance’s sole jurisdiction," I whispered. "The papers you had me sign only transferred liability for Apex’s toxic debt back to your personal portfolio. You didn't steal my fortune, Julian. You legally signed yourself into complete financial ruin."
Before Julian could scream, Gordon stepped forward, kicking the briefcase away and pinning Julian against the server rack as sirens wailed in the distance. Federal agents poured through the secondary entrance, led by Arthur's trusted liaisons within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
As they dragged Julian away, his incoherent curses echoing down the hall, Gordon turned to me, wiping a smudge of soot from my cheek.
"One monster down," he said softly.

"Thorne is still airborne," I replied, looking toward the open night sky. "And he has the master vial."
