Chapter 33 - The Fire in the Sanctuary

Thorne’s face drained of every ounce of aristocratic color. For the first time in his life, the puppet master looked into the eyes of someone he could neither buy, manipulate, nor destroy.

"Arrest him," Gordon commanded the federal team that stormed the cabin behind us. "He’ll face twenty charges of biological terrorism, illegal human experimentation, and corporate treason."

As Thorne was dragged from the plane in heavy titanium restraints, Gordon turned to me, his chest heaving, his dark eyes wide with awe and a sudden, sharp surge of vulnerability.

"You destroyed the only physical sample," he breathed, stepping close to me amid the howling wind and flashing red police beacons on the tarmac.

"Because as long as that physical vial existed, men like Thorne and Julian would hunt it, hoard it, and kill for it," I said, the rain soaking into my hair, running down my neck, cleansing away the lingering filth of seven years of subjugation. "My mother never wanted her legacy kept in a safe. She gave it to me so I could give it freely to whoever needed it."

Gordon reached out, cupping my face in his warm, calloused hand. His thumb traced the curve of my cheekbone, his touch sending a fierce, electric shiver through my core. "You are extraordinary, Elena Vance."

"I had a very good teacher in survival," I murmured, leaning into his touch for a fleeting, beautiful moment.

"We need to get back to the ship," Gordon whispered, his forehead gently resting against mine. "Arthur collapsed."

The world seemed to stop spinning. The triumph on the tarmac dissolved into instant, suffocating terror.

"What?" I gasped, pulling back. "Arthur was stable!"

"The poison Thorne’s men used on him during his captivity in the Caldera Fortress... it was delayed-release neurotoxin," Gordon said grimly. "Arthur knew it was killing him. He hid the symptoms until we secured the perimeter. He’s in the medical bay of *The Sovereign Dawn*. Elena... we don't have much time."

We didn't wait for the convoy. Gordon threw me into the passenger seat of the tactical helicopter, taking the controls himself. The rotors screamed as we lifted violently into the storm, racing against the heartbeat of the only father I had ever known.
