Chapter 34 - The Threshold of Life

The medical bay aboard *The Sovereign Dawn* was an orchestra of rhythmic, frantic alarms. Dr. Sarah Lin and the marine medical staff were working furiously around Arthur’s bed, multiple IV lines pumping synthetic detoxifying agents into his veins to no avail.

Arthur lay pale as marble, his breath shallow and ragged, his vital signs plummeting on the central telemetry monitor.

"Arthur!" I cried out, bursting through the airtight doors, tearing off my rain-soaked jacket. I dropped to my knees beside his bed, taking his limp, cold hand between both of mine. "Father, stay with me! Please!"

Arthur opened his eyes weakly, his gaze unfocused until it found my face. A faint, trembling smile touched his graying lips. "Elena... my brave girl..."

"The toxin is binding to his central nervous system," Dr. Lin reported, her hands shaking slightly as she analyzed the cellular readout. "Standard medicine can't flush it out. The open-source Genesis Key could repair the tissue damage, but it requires the living baseline to bind at a cellular level. Without it, the synthesis will cause complete organ rejection within minutes."

"I am the baseline," I told Dr. Lin, ripping up the sleeve of my sweater and extending my arm toward the phlebotomy tray. "Draw my blood. Synthesize the core matrix now!"

"Elena, wait," Gordon warned gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. "To produce a therapeutic dose capable of neutralizing a systemic neurotoxin, she needs to extract a massive quantity of stem-cell rich plasma. It could put you into hypovolemic shock. You could go into cardiac arrest."

"I don't care," I looked Gordon dead in the eye, my voice shaking with raw, unyielding passion. "I spent seven years believing I had no family, no roots, no purpose other than being Julian Vance’s decorative wife. I got my father back two weeks ago, Gordon. I will bleed every drop in my body before I let them take him from me again."

Gordon stared at me, his jaw tightening, before he nodded to Dr. Lin. "Do it. But hook me up to Elena for direct transfusion the second her blood pressure drops. If she gives her life, I’m giving mine to keep her tethered."

"Gordon—" I whispered, tears blurring my vision.

"Don't argue with me, Elena," he said, rolling up his own sleeve, sitting on the adjacent cot and locking his fingers tightly between mine. "We survive together. That was the deal."

Dr. Lin inserted the large-gauge needles. The centrifuge hummed to life. As my blood was drawn into the synthesis chamber, the room began to spin. A creeping, icy coldness crept into my fingertips, spreading up my arms. My vision tunneled into darkness, but through the fading haze, the only anchor keeping me from slipping into the abyss was the crushing, unyielding grip of Gordon’s hand.
