Chapter 28 - The Judgment of Arthur Whitaker

Nathan didn't flinch. He didn't drop his gaze. The crushing, suffocating terror he had carried in his heart for nearly three decades seemed to evaporate into the stormy air of the library.
"Arthur," Nathan said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth, fear, or filial reverence.
"Is that how you greet your father after twenty-six years?" Arthur chuckled, leaning back into his wingback chair. "I gave you a name that opened every boardroom on Wall Street. I left you an empire. And how did you repay me? You let Brooke run you into the ground, and then you bred with an army grunt who dragged our pedigree through the dirt."
"You didn't leave me an empire, Arthur," Nathan said, taking three measured steps toward the hearth. "You left me a curse. You staged your death because the Securities and Exchange Commission was forty-eight hours away from indicting you for treasonous defense procurement fraud. You let Brooke take the blame. You let her poison her own mind with greed, and then you watched from your Swiss tower while she nearly murdered my son."
Arthur’s eyes turned cold as slate. "Your son is a Whitaker. He belongs to the legacy. You were always too weak, Nathan. Soft. Whining about ethics and love. Leo has the Whitaker jaw. He will have the Whitaker fortune. When my heart gives out, he will take Vanguard Apex."
"He will never know your name," I interrupted, stepping forward until the shadow of my rifle fell across Arthur's face.
Arthur sneered up at me. "And who are you, little Colonel? You think a few medals and an assault rifle intimidate me? I have personal relationships with four former directors of the Central Intelligence Agency. By sunrise, your little strike team will be court-martialed, Nathan will be under federal indictment for assaulting my estate, and Brooke will be released under executive clemency."
I pulled a sealed titanium folder from under my arm and tossed it onto the glass table directly into his snifter of Scotch, shattering the crystal.
"Check your satellite feed, Arthur," I said coldly.
Arthur frowned, glancing toward the high-definition monitor mounted above the mantle.
The screen blinked to life. It displayed live feeds from Zurich, London, and Grand Cayman. Swiss federal prosecutors, flanked by Interpol tactical units, were currently raiding Vanguard Apex’s headquarters on the Bahnhofstrasse. Digital seizure banners were flashing across his offshore accounts in real time.
Arthur's breath caught in his throat. His aristocratic composure cracked, revealing the panicked, dying old man beneath.
"What is this?" Arthur wheezed, his heart monitor beep beginning to spike on his wrist display. "What did you do?!"
May you like
"My division doesn't just kick down doors, Arthur," I said. "We follow the money. We seized your daughter Victoria two hours ago at Teterboro. She gave up your encrypted ledger in exchange for avoiding federal conspiracy charges. Your assets are frozen. Your shell corporations are seized under the Patriot Act. You aren't an emperor anymore. You are an international fugitive whose bank accounts have exactly zero dollars."
