Chapter 23 - The Road to Teterboro

I bounded down the stairs to the sub-basement vault, tapping the biometric scanner. "Valkyrie Nine."

The heavy steel door slid open with a hydraulic hiss. Nathan stepped out instantly, holding an iron fire poker in white-knuckled hands, with seven-year-old Leo tucked safely behind him under a fleece blanket.

When Nathan saw the blood splatter on my tactical trousers and the smoking carbine slung across my chest, his breath hitched. But there was no fear in his eyes—only an iron resolve that mirrored my own.

"Leo is safe," Nathan said. "What happened?"

"Arthur’s extraction team is neutralized," I said briskly, stripping off my tactical vest and throwing Nathan the keys to our armored Suburban in the underground garage. "Brooke just escaped federal custody. Arthur’s daughter Victoria orchestrated a prison break disguised as a medical emergency. They are heading toward Teterboro Airport. Arthur has a long-range Gulfstream prepped for Zurich."

Nathan’s jaw dropped. "Brooke is out? She poisoned our son, tried to destroy our lives, and now she’s running to my father?"

"Not if we intercept them first," I said, crouching down before Leo.

My sweet boy looked at me with wide, courageous brown eyes. He had survived the Whitaker family's venom, survived the hospital, and he knew his mother was an army officer.

"Mommy?" he whispered. "Are the bad people coming back?"

"No, sweetheart," I said, running a gentle hand through his hair. "Mommy is going to put them away forever. I need you to stay with Aunt Sarah at the command post. Can you be a brave soldier for me?"

Leo nodded firmly, clutching his stuffed bear. "Yes, Colonel Mommy."

Ten minutes later, Leo was safely handed over to Captain Sarah Diaz and four armed plainclothes operators at our secondary tactical relay station.

Nathan climbed into the passenger seat of the Suburban beside me, racking the slide of a standard-issue Glock I had handed him.

"Nathan," I said, glancing at him as I floored the twin-turbo V8, roaring out onto the highway into the pre-dawn rain. "You don't have to be there when the hammer falls."

"Yes, I do," Nathan said, his voice deadly steady. "All my life, Arthur made me feel like an insignificant insect. He made Brooke into a monster, and Brooke tried to make me into one. When Leo was dying, I stood by Brooke like a blind coward until you showed me what real strength looks like. I am your husband, Elena. I am Leo's father. I am finishing this with you."

I reached across the console, squeezing his hand. "Then hold on. We have an airspace to shut down."
