Chapter 22 - The Serpent’s Tongue

The front door didn’t splinter; it breached with a surgical explosive charge that blew the deadbolts inward.

Four private contractors in sterile, unmarked tactical gear moved across the threshold in a textbook dynamic entry, their submachine guns raised, sweeping the foyer with laser sights. They were smooth, well-drilled, moving with the precision of former British SAS or Swiss private security.

They were good. But they were entering the home of an active Colonel of Delta Special Recon.

I dropped from the top landing of the second-floor banister, landing directly behind their rear-guard operator. Before the sole of his boot touched the hardwood, my combat blade severed his brachial artery, and my left arm snapped around his throat, driving him silently to the floor.

The second man turned at the muffled rustle of nylon. He didn't even have time to bring his barrel up before two 9mm rounds punched through the center of his visor, dropping him instantly.

The remaining two operators scattered, opening fire on the stairwell. The suppressed gunfire sounded like angry hornets chewing through drywall. I rolled behind the reinforced concrete archway of the kitchen, pulling a flashbang from my tactical vest. I cooked it for one second, banked it off the mirrored hallway console, and listened for the deafening *BANG-FLASH*.

Blinded and disoriented, the lead gunman fired blindly into the ceiling. I stepped through the smoke, firing three double-taps with chilling precision.

Silence fell over the safehouse, punctuated only by the sizzle of scorched plaster.

I walked over to the squad leader, who was still wheezing, clutching his shattered shoulder. I planted my combat boot onto his chest, leaning down until my night-vision goggles reflected in his terrified pupils.

"Who issued the exfiltration order?" I whispered.

The man coughed blood, his voice rattling. "Whitaker... Victoria Whitaker. She's waiting... at the private hangar in Teterboro... They have federal clearance... you're already dead, lady..."

"Wrong answer," I said, driving the butt of my sidearm into his temple, knocking him into unconsciousness.

I pulled out my secure communicator and patched directly into Colonel Vance at the Pentagon.

"Vance, Arthur’s hounds just breached my front door. Four casualties, all foreign PMCs. Secure the perimeter of Federal Correctional Institution Danbury immediately. Brooke Whitaker is running comms for Arthur from inside her cell."

"Colonel Elena," Vance’s gravelly voice replied through my earpiece, accompanied by the urgent clatter of keyboards. "We just pulled the visitor logs from Danbury. Brooke had an unscheduled attorney visit twenty minutes ago. The visitor wasn't her legal counsel. It was Victoria Whitaker, carrying forged Department of Justice credentials."

My blood ran like liquid ice. "Is Brooke still in her cell?"

"Negative," Vance replied grimly. "Brooke was transferred to a medical transport van ten minutes ago under the guise of an acute myocardial infarction. The transport was escorted by two federal marshal cruisers that don't exist on any regional duty roster."

They hadn't just come to take Leo. They had broken Brooke Whitaker out of federal custody.
