Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

Summer in Chicago rolled in with a brilliant, golden warmth that made the entire city feel alive.
My career was thriving on a scale I hadn't anticipated. Following the successful delivery of the Grandview Hotel lighting package, three major hospitality brands reached out to contract my firm for upcoming luxury resorts across the country. I was no longer just managing projects; I was leading an entire design division.
My personal life, too, had found a rhythm of effortless joy.
Liam and I had moved past corporate blueprints into late-night dinners, weekend trips to Lake Geneva, and easy, uncomplicated laughter. He was a partner who respected my space, celebrated my independence, and never, under any circumstances, handed out spare keys without my knowledge.
One Saturday morning, as I poured fresh coffee in my kitchen and looked out over the sunlit Chicago River through my spotless condo windows, my phone buzzed on the counter.
It was an unknown number.
I hesitated for a second, then tapped the screen to listen to the voicemail notification.
Evan’s voice came through the speaker—thinned out, desperate, and small.
*“Maya... hey. I know it’s been a long time. I just... I wanted to apologize. Really apologize. I lost everything, Maya. My job, my reputation, my apartment... everything. If there’s any way we could just talk—"*
I listened to the first ten seconds, shook my head, and pressed *Delete*.
Then I blocked the number permanently.

There was no anger left, not even satisfaction—just the quiet, absolute peace of knowing that my life was entirely my own, built on solid ground that no one could ever tamper with again.
