Chapter 7 - The Closing Argument

Two months later, the legal saga was officially closed.

I sat in Diane Vance’s corner office on the fortieth floor of a downtown skyscraper, signing the final paperwork that officially severed every remaining financial and legal tie between Evan Brooks and myself.

Diane slid the folder across her mahogany desk and looked at me with genuine admiration. "You know, in my twenty years of practicing family and corporate law, I have rarely seen someone dismantle a toxic situation with such clinical precision."

"You don't survive in commercial lighting design without learning how to handle unstable foundations," I smiled, capping my pen.

"Well, your ex-fiancé learned a very expensive lesson," Diane said, closing the binder with a satisfying snap. "He’s currently trying to sell his stake in Brooks & Associates at a severe discount just to cover his mounting legal debts and IRS penalties from the corporate audit. And Lauren? Word is she moved back to her parents' house in Ohio."

I felt no pity, only a profound sense of closure. The past was history, neatly filed away where it belonged.

That evening, Nina threw a celebratory dinner party at a trendy rooftop restaurant in the Gold Coast. The table was filled with our closest friends, incredible food, and endless laughter. There was no talk of wedding budgets, no shadow of deceit, and no hidden keys.

As I raised a glass of champagne to toast the table, I looked around at the people who had stood by me through every moment of the storm.

"To new foundations," I said clearly.

"To new foundations!" everyone echoed, glasses clinking against the night sky.
