Chapter 5 - The Fallout Expands

By Wednesday, the story had officially broken out of the local Chicago architectural circles and landed squarely in the realm of viral social media fodder.

It started with a blind item on a popular Chicago lifestyle Instagram page (@LoopWhispers): *“Which prominent Loop architect just had his entire life implode because he tried to move his ex-fiancée into his current fiancée’s condo while she was at work—only to find the locks changed and a locksmith waiting?”*

Within hours, the comments section exploded. People who had worked with Evan, people who knew Lauren from her days in Indianapolis, and people who simply loved architectural-scale relationship drama began piecing the clues together. By Wednesday afternoon, someone posted screenshots of the public court filings regarding the frozen wedding funds and the corporate compliance audit at Brooks & Associates.

My phone blew up with notifications. Nina called me while I was in the middle of reviewing lighting specifications for a high-end restaurant in the West Loop.

"Maya, you are trending on Twitter," Nina announced, sounding half-thrilled and half-terrified. "There is a TikTok thread with over half a million views breaking down your apartment lockout story step-by-step."

"Please tell me my name isn't on it," I groaned, pinching the bridge of my nose.

"No, you're anonymous—they're calling you 'Queen of the Deadbolt,' and everyone is praising your tactical brilliance. But Evan? Evan's professional life is officially ash. Brooks & Associates just put out a formal statement announcing he has been 'indefinitely suspended' pending an internal investigation."

"What about Lauren?" I asked, scrolling through my emails on my second monitor.

"Oh, Lauren deleted all her social media accounts and apparently packed up her moving truck—which was sitting in a public storage lot in Cicero racking up daily fees—and drove back to Indiana on Tuesday night."

I let out a long breath, feeling a profound sense of weight lifting off my shoulders. The chaos was settling, leaving behind a clean, pristine slate.

Later that evening, Louise Alvarez knocked on my door. When I opened it, the property manager was holding a bottle of expensive champagne and two plastic cups.

"Congratulations," Louise said with a rare, brilliant smile. "The board just approved a permanent flag on Mr. Brooks's name and ID. He is officially banned from entering the property under any circumstances."

"Thank you, Louise," I said, genuinely touched. "I appreciate everything you and building security did."

"Consider it standard pest control," Louise laughed, handing me a plastic cup. "By the way, there's a guy downstairs in the lobby asking for you. Says his name is Liam. He’s the lead structural engineer who took over Evan’s accounts at the firm. He said he wanted to drop off some revised project blueprints in person, but honestly? I think he was just trying to find an excuse to see if you were single."

I raised an eyebrow. "Did you tell him I was?"

May you like

"I told him you had just successfully defended your fortress against a hostile takeover," Louise grinned, clinking her plastic cup against mine. "And that any man smart enough to approach you better bring his own deadbolt."
