Chapter 8 - Brielle's Desperate Gambit

By 3:00 AM, the internet had transformed the Vanguard Gala into the biggest entertainment scandal of the decade.
Hashtags demanding Ryan Devereaux’s permanent cancellation trended at number one across every social platform. Video clips of his arrest and my balcony speech had accumulated over one hundred million views. Every major brand—luxury watches, athletic wear, designer fragrances—released identical statements terminating their endorsement contracts with him before the stock market even opened.
Sitting in the private recovery suite of Cedars-Sinai where Julian had quietly relocated me, I watched the television screen on the wall.
Suddenly, an emergency press conference flickered onto the screen.
Brielle St. James sat behind a battery of microphones at a 24-hour media center, flanked by a prominent crisis PR lawyer. Her face was scrubbed clean of makeup, her eyes puffy, holding a tissue to her nose in a calculated display of victimhood.
"I am here tonight to speak the truth," Brielle sobbed into the microphones. "I was manipulated and groomed by an older, powerful actor. Ryan Devereaux told me his marriage was legally over. He told me his wife was supportive of our partnership. I had no idea Mrs. Devereaux was hospitalized. I am horrified by his actions, and I stand in complete solidarity with Mara as a fellow woman victimized by an abusive narcissist."
Vivian, who was seated by the window reviewing legal documents, scoffed aloud. "What an actress. She's angling for a book deal before the sun even rises."
"Let her talk," I murmured, watching Brielle dab at tears that weren't falling.
"I am officially stepping down from the Vanguard slate," Brielle continued, looking directly into the lens with practiced sincerity. "And I pray Mara can find it in her heart to forgive me for being an unwitting pawn in Ryan's cruel games."
I tapped the screen of my tablet and looked at Vivian. "Vivian, remember that cloud backup from Ryan's personal iPad that Julian retrieved from the guest house?"
Vivian smirked. "Of course. The encrypted folders."
"Release the audio recording from last Tuesday," I instructed calmly. "The one where Brielle discusses my medical history with Ryan's agent."
Ten minutes later, entertainment blogs received an unedited, crystal-clear audio file.
Brielle's unmistakable, mocking voice blasted through the internet: *“I don’t care if Mara is having complications with her pregnancy. Tell Ryan to keep her at home. If she shows up at the premiere looking pale and pathetic, all the cameras will focus on her instead of my dress. Let her stay locked in the bedroom until the press tour is over.”*
The internet’s response was immediate and savage. Brielle’s comment sections were disabled within three minutes. Her talent agency dropped her five minutes later.
