Chapter 4 - The Shattered Facade

The ballroom detonated into pandemonium.

Flashes from paparazzi cameras erupted like a localized lightning storm. Society women covered their mouths in horror; studio executives scrambled out of their chairs, frantically dialing crisis PR firms.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors behind me gave way with a violent crash.

Ryan broke through, breathing heavily, his custom Tom Ford tuxedo jacket crooked, his styled hair plastered to his forehead with cold sweat. His face was gray, his eyes wide and wild with terror. Behind him, Brielle stumbled out, clutching a satin shawl around her shoulders, tears streaking her perfectly contoured foundation.

"Mara! Shut it off!" Ryan shrieked, lunging toward me. "Shut it down right now! You're destroying everything! Ten years of my life! My entire career!"

Before his fingers could even brush the fabric of my dress, Julian stepped out from the shadows.

Julian didn't hesitate. With the practiced economy of an elite bodyguard and former military contractor, he stepped inside Ryan's reach, caught the actor by the collar of his designer shirt, and twisted him backward into the marble balustrade with a sickening thud.

"Step back from Mrs. Devereaux," Julian commanded, his baritone slicing through Ryan's hysterical panic. "Take another step toward her, and I will personally throw you over this railing into the press pit."

Ryan groaned, sliding down against the stone railing. He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot, pathetic, stripped of every shred of Hollywood charm.

"Mara... baby, please," he sobbed, his voice cracking as he realized the cameras below were now pointed straight up at the balcony, capturing his groveling posture in real time. "You don't understand... Vance made me do it. The studio threatened to cancel my contract if I didn't play along with the publicity stunt! Brielle means nothing to me! It was just business! You know how this town works!"

Brielle gasped, her tear-stained eyes widening in sudden, vicious betrayal. "What did you just say, Ryan? Business? You told me you were filing for divorce tonight! You told me you never loved this bitter, barren woman!"

She lunged at him, her manicured nails raking across his cheek, drawing bright red beads of blood. Ryan cursed, shoving her away so hard she crashed against the ornamental planters.

The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence as their golden couple ripped each other apart on live television.

"Is this the leading man you invested eighty million dollars in, Arthur?" I asked, turning my gaze back down to Vance, whose phone was now buzzing relentlessly in his trembling hand. "A coward who abandons his dying wife on an operating table, cheats with a starlet, and blames his studio when the lights turn on?"

"Mara, you crazy bitch!" Ryan bellowed, rising to his feet with blood trickling down his cheek, pointing an accusatory finger at me. "You think you won? Vanguard owns me! Arthur owns this entire town! You won't walk out of this building without being sued into oblivion! You’ll spend the rest of your miserable life paying off my defamation damages!"

I looked at him with an expression of profound pity.

"You really should have read your marriage prenup more carefully, Ryan," I said softly. "And Arthur Vance should have checked who held his studio's master promissory notes."
