Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The sun rose over the ocean, casting a pale golden light across the cliffside safehouse. Daniel was in a medically induced coma at the university hospital, guarded by six armed marshals. Emily had broken under interrogation, confessing everything she knew about the Swiss bank accounts in exchange for protective custody.
By 9:00 AM, I was seated at the head of the conference table inside Grandfather’s private library, dressed in an immaculate ivory power suit. Across from me sat three forensic auditors, two federal prosecutors, and Marcus Vance.
"Victoria Sterling holds seventeen percent of Apex Horizon's voting stock through Obsidian Crest," Marcus explained, projecting the corporate hierarchy onto the wall. "She has called an emergency shareholder vote for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM to dissolve the executive committee and force a liquidation sale of the harbor lands."
"She’s moving fast," I noted, studying the financial charts. "She knows Daniel’s testimony will lead federal agents straight to her door. If she liquidates the harbor lands, the money disappears into offshore shell companies within minutes."
"Exactly," Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes agreed. "And without Daniel awake to testify to her direct orders, our criminal indictment against Victoria remains circumstantial. We need the physical bearer bonds Grandfather recorded in that dossier."
I tapped my fingers on the mahogany table. "The audio cassette tape from Box 409. Have we digitized it yet?"
Marcus nodded to the tech specialist. "Play it."
The audio equipment hummed, and after a moment of tape hiss, Grandfather’s deep, commanding voice filled the room, recorded seven years ago:
*'This recording is made on the fourteenth of October. If Victoria Sterling attempts to assert control over the Vance Harbor Trust, be advised that every share purchased by Obsidian Crest was bought with laundered funds stolen from the 1994 European transport merger. I have deposited the encrypted banking keys inside the server of the St. Jude Children’s Research Wing—the foundation I endowed in my wife’s name. Victoria cannot touch those servers without triggering an automatic federal disclosure.'*
The tape ended.
I looked at Marcus, a sharp, cold realization dawning on me. "St. Jude Memorial Hospital. That’s where they took Daniel."
Marcus froze. "The hospital where Daniel was transported... is the same network that hosts the St. Jude Children's Foundation servers."

"Victoria didn't poison Daniel just to silence him," I said, rising instantly from my chair. "She poisoned him to create an emergency that would grant her access to the hospital’s restricted administrative wings! She’s not running away—she’s retrieving the banking keys right now!"
"Hayes, mobilize the tactical unit!" Marcus shouted, already grabbing his coat. "Lock down St. Jude Memorial immediately!"
