Chapter 12 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy blast doors slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic crash, sealing the server room.

From ceiling nozzles, thick clouds of freezing white vapor erupted into the room with a deafening hiss. The temperature plummeted instantaneously. Frost spread across the glass server racks like spiderwebs.

Marcus dragged me backward into the small airlocked vestibule just as the main chamber froze over completely. Through the reinforced viewport, we watched the computer screen flicker, freeze on **00:04**, and die. The thermal wipe had failed. The evidence was preserved in crystalline ice.

Victoria was dragged into the vestibule by Alvarez, shivering violently, handcuffed and broken, her expensive coat coated in frost.

"Take her away," Marcus ordered, his breath fogging in the frigid air. "Charge her with treason, capital murder, corporate espionage, and attempted mass terrorism."

Victoria glared at me as they hauled her toward the elevator, her teeth chattering with rage. "You think you've won, little girl? Julian’s line... doesn't end with Daniel! There are others... others who know what your grandfather buried in the harbor!"

The elevator doors closed, cutting off her voice forever.

Three hours later, the medical examiner confirmed Daniel Hastings had passed away in the ICU. The man who had spent six years lying to my face, who had poisoned my womb to steal my legacy, was gone.

I stood by the window of Grandfather’s estate that evening, watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic horizon. The storm clouds had finally cleared, leaving behind a sky of violet and gold.

Marcus entered the drawing room, holding a glass of sparkling cider for me and a scotch for himself.

"The federal court has dismissed all claims against the estate," Marcus said gently, raising his glass. "Apex Horizon is officially dissolved. Its operating assets have been returned to the Vance Heritage Trust. And your doctors confirm the baby’s vitals are phenomenal."

I touched my stomach, smiling through a lingering haze of exhaustion. "We survived, Marcus. It’s over."

"It is," Marcus agreed, taking a sip. "Tomorrow, we begin restructuring the harbor trust in your name and your child’s name."

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Henri walked into the drawing room a moment later, carrying a silver tray. On the tray sat a single, unaddressed black envelope sealed with antique red wax.

"Pardon the interruption, Mrs. Vance," Henri said politely. "A courier just dropped this off at the security gate. He said it was marked urgent and personal."

Marcus frowned, instantly stepping between me and the tray. "Wait. Let me inspect it."

"No, Marcus," I said, noticing the wax seal.

The wax wasn't stamped with the Vance crest, nor Victoria’s seal. It was stamped with the emblem of the Royal Maritime Admiralty of London—an institution Grandfather had retired from forty years ago.

I picked up the heavy linen envelope, broke the wax, and unfolded the letter inside.

Typed on heavy parchment was a short, cryptic message:

*'My dearest granddaughter Clara,*

*If you are reading this, Victoria and Daniel have fallen into the trap I laid for them before I staged my passing.*

*Forgive me for the cruelty of my silence, my child. The poison they fed you was monitored by Dr. Wright from the beginning; the antidotes were woven into your diet to ensure you would never suffer permanent harm.*

*Now that the vipers have shown their hands and destroyed themselves, it is time for you to learn the truth about the Vance fortune—and who your child’s real father is.*

*Meet me at the harbor pier tomorrow at midnight.*

*Your loving Grandfather,Arthur Vance.'*

My hands began to shake violently. The paper fluttered in my grip.

Grandfather? Staged his passing?

May you like

Before I could speak, Marcus’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, and his face turned stark white.

"Clara..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up from the screen. "The medical examiner’s office in London just called. Arthur Vance’s family crypt... was opened from the inside two hours ago."
