Chapter 8 - The Safehouse Shadow

The emergency red sirens started wailing, their piercing shriek echoing off the cold steel walls.

"Security! Front perimeter!" Marcus yelled, pulling me behind the heavy vault door as our guards drew their weapons.

Through the dim red strobes, gunfire erupted in the lobby above—muffled, suppressed pops followed by shattering glass.

"They're not waiting for noon," I said, adrenaline surging through my veins, sharpening every sense. "Victoria Sterling knows Daniel failed. She’s cleaning house."

"Down the maintenance corridor!" the lead security guard shouted, kicking open a reinforced emergency door at the rear of the vault. "The freight elevator leads directly to the subterranean loading dock! Move, now!"

Marcus held my arm tightly as we sprinted through the concrete service tunnel. Every beat of my heart thundered in my ears, reminding me of the fragile new life I was carrying. *I will protect you,* I vowed silently. *No matter what happens, you will survive.*

We reached the loading dock just as two black SUVs screeched through the rolling metal gate. But instead of attackers, four tactical officers in state police uniforms stepped out, weapons raised.

"Clear! Mrs. Hastings, get in!" an officer shouted.

Marcus let out a breath of relief. "My backup. I had them on standby at the precinct."

We scrambled into the armored SUV. The heavy doors slammed shut, and the vehicle peeled out into the night rain, sirens wailing as we sped away from the corporate tower.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at an undisclosed estate on the northern cliffs—Grandfather’s private coastal retreat, fortified with high walls and biometric security that Daniel had never had access to.

A private medical team was already waiting in the master suite.

Dr. Catherine Wright, a trusted family physician who had known my mother, immediately set up a portable ultrasound machine while Marcus coordinated with federal prosecutors in the adjoining study.

"Lie back, Clara," Dr. Catherine said gently, her warm eyes offering the first sense of safety I had felt in twenty-four hours. "Let’s take a look at our little fighter."

She applied the warm gel to my lower abdomen and moved the transducer. The monitor flickered to life with static gray and black images.

I held my breath. After five years of being told my body was a barren wasteland, after five years of silent grief, I braced myself for heartbreak.

Then, a sound filled the quiet bedroom.

*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

Fast, steady, defiant. The heartbeat of a child that refused to be extinguished by five years of poison.

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and unstoppable, dripping onto the pillow.

"Look right there," Dr. Catherine smiled warmly, pointing to the tiny pulsating flicker on the screen. "Strong gestational sac. Heart rate is 142 beats per minute. Clara, the poison never penetrated the deep endometrial tissue. Your body fought it off. Your baby is completely healthy."

I covered my mouth with a trembling hand, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude. "Thank God. Oh, thank God."

The bedroom door opened quietly. Marcus stepped inside, his expression dark despite the joyful sound in the room.

"Clara," he said softly. "You need to see this."

He held up his tablet. On the screen was a live news broadcast from the county detention center.

The news anchor’s voice was urgent: *"Breaking news: Daniel Hastings, former CEO of Apex Horizon who was arrested earlier this evening, has been found unconscious in his cell following an apparent poisoning. Paramedics are currently transporting him to St. Jude Memorial Hospital under heavy guard..."*

I stared at the screen in disbelief. Victoria Sterling was tying up loose ends. She had poisoned Daniel with the very same untraceable toxin he had used on me.
