Chapter 5 - The Freezing of Empires

The sound of tearing paper was like a gunshot in the silent room. I let the shredded pages flutter down onto Daniel’s pristine leather dress shoes.

"Emily!" Daniel screamed, lunging forward, but Detective Alvarez grabbed his shoulder, shoving him down onto the table and twisting his arm behind his back. The handcuffs clicked shut with cold, mechanical finality. "Emily, call Harrison! Call our corporate counsel now!"

"She can't call anyone, Mr. Hastings," Marcus said coolly. "Miss Emily Hastings—or should I say, Emily Vance-Reyes—is also named in the indictment."

Emily froze, her manicured hands trembling as she looked at Marcus. "I... I was just following orders! I'm his sister! I didn't know what was in the capsules! Daniel handled all the medical deliveries! Clara, please, you know me! We went shopping together, we decorated this house together!"

"You procured the raw chemicals through an unlicensed compounding pharmacy in Tijuana, Emily," Marcus said, reading directly from a tablet. "Using Apex Horizon’s corporate credit card. The DEA intercepted the customs manifests three weeks ago under my request. We just needed Clara’s official laboratory confirmation to close the trap."

Emily burst into hysterical tears, sinking to her knees against the dining room sideboard. "He told me she would never find out! He promised we’d take the European division once the trust vested!"

"Shut up, you idiot!" Daniel bellowed, struggling against Alvarez’s grip. "Shut your mouth! Clara, listen to me! This is a misunderstanding! We can settle this privately! Think of the press! Think of your grandfather’s reputation! If this goes to trial, the Hastings-Vance stock will plummet by forty percent by tomorrow morning!"

"Let it plummet," I said, leaning down so my eyes were level with his. "Stock prices recover, Daniel. Souls do not."

Detective Alvarez hauled Daniel to his feet. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As the Miranda rights echoed through the chandelier-lit room, Daniel’s eyes locked onto mine with feral rage. "You think you've won, Clara? The trust requires a living heir by your thirty-first birthday next month! Thirty days! If there’s no verified biological child on file, the Vance trust automatically liquidates into the municipal conservatorship! You won't get a dime either! You destroyed both of us!"

I smiled. A slow, serene, radiant smile that made Daniel stop mid-breath.

I reached into my designer purse resting on the credenza. I pulled out the white plastic stick with the two clear, undeniable pink lines.

I held it up between my thumb and forefinger, letting the dining room chandelier illuminate it.

"Thirty days will be more than enough, Daniel," I whispered. "Because I'm four weeks pregnant."

Daniel’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face until he resembled a corpse. "No... no, that’s impossible. You took the pills! I watched you take them with your tea last month!"

"I switched them three weeks ago when I noticed the chemical smell," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly murmur. "I stopped taking your poison, Daniel. And the universe decided to give me what you tried to murder for five years."

He stared at the positive test, his chest heaving, realization crashing into him like a tidal wave: his entire five-year scheme hadn't just failed—it had handed me the absolute, unassailable legal control of the entire hundred-million-dollar empire forever.

"Take them out," Marcus told the officers.

As the police dragged Daniel and Emily toward the front door, Daniel’s screams echoed down the long corridor, cursing my name until the heavy doors slammed shut behind them.

Silence settled over the dining room.

Marcus walked over, took out a clean linen handkerchief, and handed it to me. "Are you alright, Clara?"

I touched my stomach, feeling the slight, miraculous warmth beneath my fingertips. "I'm more than alright, Marcus. Let’s dismantle everything he ever touched."
