Chapter 8 - The Olive Branch in the Blizzard

Two days after Christmas, the snowstorm finally broke, leaving Chicago buried under three feet of pristine, blinding white powder.

Inside the modern glass-and-stone lakefront mansion of Roman and Hannah Duca, the atmosphere was warm, fragrant with the scent of fresh coffee and roasted cinnamon rolls, and utterly peaceful.

Hannah sat at the marble kitchen island, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater, scrolling through foundation restructuring proposals on her tablet. The red mark on her cheek had completely faded, leaving behind only smooth, flawless olive skin.

Roman walked up behind her silently, wrapping his large, warm arms around her shoulders and burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.

"You smell like vanilla and dangerous competence," Roman murmured, pressing a soft kiss against her skin.

Hannah smiled, leaning back against his solid chest. "Good morning to you, too, CEO Duca. Did you sleep well?"

"Like a rock. For the first time in five years," Roman admitted, his arms tightening around her waist. "Though my phone has been buzzing off the hook since 6:00 AM."

"Let me guess," Hannah turned slightly in his embrace, raising an eyebrow. "Uncle Arthur?"

"Arthur, Cynthia, three different cousins, and a very tearful voicemail from my mother."

Hannah hummed softly, resting her hands over his. "And what did your mother say?"

Roman was quiet for a long moment, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows toward the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan.

"She didn't make excuses," Roman said quietly. "She cried. She admitted she was wrong. Not just about the embezzlement, but... about everything."

Hannah didn't look surprised. She had anticipated this exact trajectory down to the statistical probability curve.

"She wants to come over," Roman continued, turning Hannah around in his arms so she was facing him directly. His dark eyes searched hers with careful hesitation. "She asked if she could apologize to you in person. Properly. Without witnesses, without board members, and without her pride."

Hannah looked up into her husband's face. She saw the quiet hope lingering in his eyes—not a demand, but a gentle request from the man who had laid his heart bare for her in the dining room.

"Tell her she can come for lunch," Hannah said calmly. "No security escorts. No dramatic speeches. Just family."

Roman’s face lit up with a brilliant, relieved smile. He leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, lingering, passionate kiss that made the rest of the world melt away entirely.
