Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels – The Trap Closes

Panic was a tangible thing in the dining room now. It hung in the air like smoke from a dying fire.

Nicholas Vale’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. He looked around the table for allies, but Uncle Arthur was staring fixedly at his water glass, Aunt Cynthia was pretending to inspect her manicure, and Bianca looked like she had just been struck by lightning for a second time that evening.

"Roman, you can't seriously believe her over family," Nicholas stammered, taking another step backward until the small of his back hit the heavy oak sideboard. Silverware rattled against crystal inside the drawers. "She’s an outsider! She’s always resented us! She’s trying to frame me so she can embezzle the funds herself and—"

"Shut up, Nicholas," Roman said. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It had the absolute, terrifying authority of a man who owned half the commercial real estate in the Midwest and employed enough private security contractors to overthrow a small banana republic.

Roman closed the distance between them with terrifying speed. Before Nicholas could react, Roman’s massive hand shot out, grabbing Nicholas by the lapels of his expensive Brioni suit and slamming him back against the heavy sideboard with a loud *thud*.

Plates rattled. A crystal water pitcher tipped over, spilling ice water across the polished wood, but nobody cared.

"Roman!" Bianca shrieked, rushing forward. "Unhand your cousin this instant! Have you lost your mind? You’re attacking family over the word of—"

"Mother," Roman turned his head just a fraction, his eyes flashing with a murderous yellow-gold light in the firelight. "If you take one more step toward me, I will cut you out of the Duca trust entirely. Sit down."

Bianca froze. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. She had never seen her son look this savage—not even when competing hostile corporate raiders tried to force Duca Enterprises into a hostile buyout five years ago.

Roman turned his cold gaze back to Nicholas, whose face was now slick with cold sweat.

"Now," Roman whispered, his face inches from his cousin's. "You are going to tell me why my wife’s tablet is currently displaying your personal cryptographic signature authorizing an eight-million-dollar wire transfer to *Apex Meridian Holdings*, or I am going to let my head of private security, Viktor, take you down to the basement armory for a private chat. And trust me, Viktor doesn't use spreadsheets."

Nicholas swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. He looked at Hannah, standing a few feet away with her tablet in hand, looking as calm as a Zen master. There was no triumph in her eyes—only a cold, clinical certainty.

"I... I didn't mean to..." Nicholas choked out, his facade completely shattering. "It was just... it was supposed to be a bridge loan!"

The entire room gasped.

Bianca clutched her chest, staggering backward until Cousin Cynthia caught her arm. "A bridge loan? Nicholas, what are you talking about?!"

"The European tech expansion," Nicholas cried out, tears of absolute terror pricking the corners of his eyes as Roman’s grip tightened on his collar, cutting off his air supply. "The venture capital round fell through last month! If I didn't show liquidity on the balance sheet by the end of the fiscal year, the board would have fired me and audited my personal accounts! I only borrowed it! I was going to put it back after the IPO in January!"

"You borrowed eight million dollars of non-profit foundation money for terminal tech startups?" Hannah asked, stepping forward. Her voice was cool, laced with a blistering contempt. "Using forged board signatures and proxy servers in Zurich?"

"You're ruined!" Bianca screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria as she stared at her favorite nephew. "You embezzled from *my* foundation? *My* legacy?!"

"Aunt Bianca, please, you have to help me—" Nicholas began, but Roman cut him off.

"Help you?" Roman’s lips curled into a humorless, predatory smile. "Nobody is helping you, Nicholas. You stole from my wife’s oversight domain. You put her in the crosshairs of my mother’s toxic abuse. And you thought you could blame it on her."

Roman shoved Nicholas backward. The younger man stumbled over a dining chair and crashed hard onto the hardwood floor, gasping for breath, clutching his bruised chest.

Roman turned to Hannah. His expression softened instantly, the murderous rage melting away into a look of profound, humbled adoration. He reached out, gently taking the tablet from her hands and setting it down on the table.

Then, in front of all twenty-three members of the Duca family, Roman Duca slowly, deliberately lowered his gaze.
