Chapter 6 - The Midnight Drive – Confessions in the Dark

The interior of the matte-black bulletproof Mercedes-Maybach was a sanctuary of absolute quiet. Outside, the blizzard raged across the interstate, turning the highway into a ribbon of swirling white, but inside, the heated leather seats and the low hum of the climate control cocooned Roman and Hannah in a world of their own.
Roman kept his hands firmly on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the illuminated road ahead, but every few seconds, his gaze darted sideways to check on his wife.
Hannah sat with her legs crossed, the heavy Microsoft Surface Pro resting in her lap as she swiped through final confirmation logs from the Zurich bank. The blue glow of the screen illuminated her calm, focused face.
"You’ve been uncharacteristically quiet for someone who just single-handedly dismantled a corporate embezzlement scheme and brought my entire family to their knees," Roman finally broke the silence, his deep voice carrying a faint trace of awe.
Hannah didn't look up from her screen, though the corners of her lips curved upward into a playful smile.
"I was calculating," she said lightly.
"Calculating what? How many pairs of Louboutins you’re going to buy with the recovered assets?"
Hannah finally locked the tablet, set it aside in the console, and turned her head to look at him. The amber dashboard lights cast soft shadows across her striking features.
"Calculating how long it’s going to take your mother to realize she can't run her charity galas without my logistical oversight," Hannah murmured, her eyes dancing with amusement.
Roman let out a sudden, deep bark of laughter—the first genuine, relaxed laugh he had emitted in months. He reached across the center console, taking her hand and bringing her knuckles to his lips for a lingering kiss.
"You are ruthless, Mrs. Duca," Roman said, his voice dropping into a low, affectionate purr. "You stood there and took that slap—took my mother’s abuse—without flinching, just so you could let Nicholas hang himself with his own digital footprint."
Hannah’s expression softened, the playful light giving way to something deeper, more honest.
"If I had reacted right away, Roman, your mother would have spun the narrative," Hannah said quietly, her thumb tracing the back of his hand. "She would have told the entire family that I was throwing a tantrum, that I was playing the victim to cover my tracks. I needed absolute, undeniable proof. Not just for the board. For *you*."
Roman’s grip on her hand tightened until it almost hurt. The playful facade vanished, replaced by a raw, naked vulnerability that only Hannah ever got to see.
"You never had to prove anything to me," Roman whispered hoarsely. "Even when my mother screamed, even when the numbers looked impossible... part of me knew. I just... I let my temper cloud my judgment."
"You’re a Duca," Hannah smiled softly, leaning over the center console to press a gentle kiss against his strong jawline, right over his stubble. "You’re programmed to suspect everyone. It’s why you survived the corporate wars. But you don't have to fight wars when you're with me, Roman."
Roman turned the steering wheel, guiding the Maybach off the main highway and onto the private, tree-lined drive leading toward their personal estate—a sprawling modern glass-and-stone mansion overlooking the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan, far away from the toxic stone fortress of his mother's Christmas dinner.

"No more wars," Roman agreed softly, pulling the car to a smooth halt in front of the illuminated grand entrance. "From now on, it’s just us."
