Chapter 9 - HORIZON’S DAWN

Six months later, the legal storm surrounding Sterling Vanguard had finally settled into quiet obscurity. Evan Mercer had accepted a plea deal resulting in a two-year sentence at a minimum-security facility—a merciful sentence compared to what the prosecutors had originally demanded, largely because Claire had instructed her legal team not to pursue maximum punitive damages.

She didn't want revenge anymore. She wanted a future.

At Meridian Arc Systems, the expansion was moving forward with breathtaking speed. The Thomas Dawson Technical Scholarship Fund had already supported over two thousand students, turning working-class dreamers into tomorrow's engineers and innovators.

On a crisp, clear Saturday morning, Claire stood on the rooftop terrace of her penthouse apartment.

The air was cool and smelled of pine and salt water from the Puget Sound. The sky was an impossible, brilliant shade of blue.

Daniel stepped out onto the terrace, holding a sleek silver tray with two steaming cups of coffee—one of them poured directly into a chipped blue ceramic mug.

"The board meeting in Zurich is confirmed for Monday, Boss," Daniel said, handing her the mug. "And... there's a gentleman downstairs in the lobby waiting for you."

Claire took a sip of her coffee, raising an eyebrow. "Another corporate acquaintance looking for forgiveness?"

Daniel smiled faintly. "Not quite. He says he's an old friend from your University of Washington days. Said he remembers the crooked kitchen table."

Claire’s breath hitched slightly. A soft, genuine smile—one that reached all the way to her eyes—spread across her face.

She set her coffee mug down on the glass patio table and turned around.

"Send him up, Daniel."
