Chapter 5 - THE EVICTION NOTICE

Within forty-eight hours, the financial news shockwaves hit Wall Street and the local Seattle tabloids.
*“TECH TITAN MERIDIAN ARC SWALLOWS STERLING VANGUARD IN DAZZLING MORNING RAID.”*
*“RISE AND FALL OF EVAN MERCER: FROM PRIVATE EQUITY STAR TO INSOLVENT DEBTOR.”*
In the opulent foyer of the Bellevue estate, the mood was no longer champagne and celebration. It was sheer, unadulterated panic.
Lorraine Mercer paced across the imported Italian marble floor, her cream cashmere sweater wrinkled and clutched tightly around her shoulders. Her face was pale, devoid of its usual arrogant makeup routine.
"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!" Lorraine shrieked into her landline telephone, her voice cracking. "I have bills to pay! The country club dues are auto-drafted today! What kind of incompetent bank freezes *my* accounts?"
The lawyer on the other end of the line sighed heavily. *"Mrs. Mercer, I’m trying to explain. The estate isn't yours anymore. The mortgage was backed by Sterling Vanguard’s corporate reserves. Since Meridian Arc liquidated the firm yesterday, the primary lienholder has initiated immediate foreclosure proceedings."*
"Foreclosure?!" Lorraine dropped the phone. It clattered against the marble floor, the dial tone buzzing like an angry hornet.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak front doors of the estate swung open.
Lorraine spun around, expecting Evan. Instead, two men in sharp dark suits walked in, accompanied by a local county sheriff’s deputy carrying a thick stack of legal documents.
"Lorraine Mercer?" the deputy asked, stepping forward with an official expression.
"How dare you walk into my house!" Lorraine screamed, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. "Do you know who I am? My son is Evan Mercer! We run this city! Get out of my house before I have you all arrested!"
The deputy didn't flinch. He handed her a bulky manila envelope. "Notice of immediate eviction and asset seizure, issued by order of the King County Superior Court on behalf of Meridian Arc Holdings."
Madison came running down the grand staircase, her phone out, recording live on Instagram. "Mom, what's going on? Why are there cops downstairs? Are these movers? Tell them to be careful with my designer bags—"
"Madison, shut up!" Lorraine sobbed, dropping the envelope as the reality of the situation finally shattered her fragile, superficial world. "We're... we're being thrown out."
"Thrown out?" Madison laughed nervously, turning her phone camera toward the deputy. "Look at this guy, guys. He’s joking. My brother is Evan Mercer, he’s a multimillionaire—"
"Your brother’s firm was liquidated yesterday morning," one of the men in suits said flatly. "Mr. Mercer is currently being detained at the precinct for questioning regarding corporate fraud and asset stripping. You have thirty minutes to pack what you can carry in two suitcases each. Anything left behind becomes property of the liquidators."
The phone slipped from Madison’s hand, crashing onto the marble floor, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of glass. The live stream abruptly cut off, watched by thousands of bewildered followers.
Outside the estate, sitting quietly in the back of a black sedan parked across the street, Claire watched through the tinted window.
She held the chipped blue coffee mug in her hands, taking a slow sip of warm chamomile tea.
Daniel sat in the front passenger seat, turning back to look at her. "The marshals are clearing the house, Boss. Sterling Vanguard’s assets are completely secured. Evan is facing a minimum of five years for corporate malfeasance based on the forensic audit."
Claire didn't say anything for a long moment. She watched as Lorraine and Madison were escorted out onto the grand stone porch, each dragging a single battered suitcase behind them under the grey Seattle drizzle.
Lorraine looked around wildly, screaming curses at the sky, while Madison buried her face in her hands, weeping tears of pure humiliation.
"Drive, Daniel," Claire said quietly, setting the blue mug down in the cup holder.
"Where to, Boss?"
Claire looked out the window toward the glittering skyline of downtown, where Horizon Tower stood tall against the clouds.
May you like
"Home."
