Chapter 2 - THE BOARDROOM AT MERIDIAN ARC

The headquarters of Meridian Arc Systems occupied the top six floors of the Horizon Tower, a sleek monolith of glass and steel that pierced the Seattle skyline.

When Claire stepped out of the private elevator on the 55th floor, the entire executive floor went dead silent.

Dozens of senior vice presidents, lead engineers, and legal counsels stopped walking. Rows of desks fell quiet. Every single person turned toward the elevator, dropped their posture into a crisp, military-grade posture, and bowed their heads in unison.

"Welcome back, Madam Chair," murmured Arthur Vance, the seventy-year-old former CEO of a Fortune 500 tech giant who now served as Meridian’s chief legal counsel.

Claire didn't smile, but her eyes softened. "At ease, Arthur. Is everyone assembled?"

"In the main boardroom," Arthur said, falling into step beside her as she walked down the polished obsidian hallway. "The Horizon Global representatives are already seated at the lower tier. Daniel has prepped the dossier on Sterling Vanguard. Evan Mercer is sitting in seat twelve, completely unaware that his firm's lifeline was cut three hours ago."

Claire walked past floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the rainy Seattle harbor. The grey mist clung to the Space Needle, wrapping the city in a cinematic gloom.

"Did he try to negotiate anything during the intake?" Claire asked.

"Sterling Vanguard? Not a peep," Daniel chimed in, walking up from behind carrying a thick leather-bound folio. "They think Horizon is injecting forty million in bridge capital today. They've already spent the money in their heads. Evan even posted on LinkedIn this morning about 'scaling new heights through strategic acquisitions.' The irony is almost too much to process."

Claire stopped before the massive frosted-glass double doors of the executive boardroom.

Engraved on the glass in subtle, elegant platinum lettering were the words: **MERIDIAN ARC SYSTEMS: GLOBAL OPERATIONS.**

She looked at her reflection in the glass. The plain wool coat was gone, replaced by a tailored charcoal-grey blazer over a simple black silk blouse. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant knot. The woman staring back was no longer the invisible wife who brewed tea in a crooked kitchen. She was the architect of an empire that controlled eighty percent of regional logistics software.

"Let's begin," Claire said.

Inside the boardroom, the atmosphere was a mix of corporate arrogance and nervous anticipation.

Evan Mercer sat near the center of the mahogany table, casually flicking lint off his custom Italian suit. He was flanked by his two junior partners, both sweating slightly despite the air conditioning. Across the table sat the middle-management reps from Horizon Global, looking strangely pale and fidgety.

"Relax, gentlemen," Evan whispered smugly to his partners. "Horizon is in our pocket. Once this meeting concludes, Sterling Vanguard’s valuation triples. My mother was right—getting rid of dead weight clears the mind and opens the financial floodgates."

At the head of the long mahogany table, the massive sixty-inch smart screen was dark. A single leather executive chair sat empty, its high back turned away from the room, facing the window.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung open.

The room stirred, expecting Daniel Brooks, the COO, to enter. Instead, Arthur Vance stepped inside first, holding the door wide open.

A woman walked in.

She moved with absolute, terrifying grace. Her heels clicked rhythmically against the polished hardwood floor. She didn't look left or right. She walked straight past the middle-management reps, past the junior partners, and stopped right at the head of the table.

Evan Mercer frowned. He squinted through his designer glasses.

The woman pulled out the high-backed executive chair, sat down, and turned her face toward the room.

Evan’s blood ran instantly cold. His heart slammed against his ribs like a trapped bird.

The breath caught in his throat, choking him. His eyes bulged, locking onto the face of the woman he had divorced three hours ago.

May you like

"C-Claire?!" Evan choked out, stumbling half-out of his chair, knocking his gold-plated pen clattering across the table. "What the hell are you doing here? Security! Security, get this homeless lunatic out of the building right now!"
