Chapter 9 - The Confession

We returned to the estate as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, painting the sky in ribbons of rose, lavender, and gold. The rain had cleared, leaving the air crisp and clean.

We stood on the grand terrace of Lorenzo’s penthouse suite, looking out over the waking city. Below us, the Hudson River sparkled under the morning sun. The weight of the past forty-eight hours had lifted, leaving behind a silence that was no longer tense, but intimate and heavy with unsaid truths.

I pulled my wrap tighter around my shoulders, breathing in the morning air.

“It’s over,” I murmured.

Lorenzo stood beside me, leaning against the stone balustrade. He had cast aside his coat, wearing only his white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

“It is,” he said. “Camille was arrested at the airport two hours ago trying to board a flight to Switzerland. The Marchetti company has been officially transferred to your name. You are free, Isabella. Completely free.”

A sudden pang of sadness struck my chest—unexpected, sharp, and deep.

*You are free.*

Did that mean our arrangement was over? Was this the moment he stepped back into his shadowy empire, leaving me with my corporate victory, while he disappeared from my life? The thought of walking away from him hurt a hundred times more than Daniel’s betrayal ever had.

“Thank you, Lorenzo,” I said softly, my eyes dropping to the floor. “For everything. I will move into a hotel today to prepare for the company transition—”

“No,” Lorenzo interrupted.

I looked up, startled.

Lorenzo had turned toward me. His gray eyes were intense, burning with an emotion so fierce and vulnerable it stripped away all his customary armor.

“You’re not going to a hotel, Isabella,” Lorenzo said, stepping toward me until there was no space left between us. “Unless you want to leave me.”

My voice caught in my throat. “Lorenzo…”

“I told you I sought you out because of your talent. That was only half the truth,” he whispered, his hands reaching up to cradle my jawline. His touch was warm, possessive, and infinitely tender. “The truth is, Isabella, I have spent three years watching you from afar, despising the fact that a coward had your loyalty. When I saw you outside that jewelry store, broken and weeping, my heart burned with a rage I haven’t felt in my entire life.”

Tears welled in my eyes, but this time they were tears of pure, overwhelming emotion.

“I am not a gentle man,” Lorenzo confessed, his thumb tracing the curve of my bottom lip. “My world is dangerous, complicated, and unforgiving. But I would burn this entire city to ash before I ever let anyone bring a tear to your eyes again. I don't want a business partner, Isabella. I want you. By my side. As my equal. As my queen.”

My heart soared, breaking free of every shadow, every doubt, every lingering ghost of the past.

“Lorenzo,” I whispered, lifting my hands to rest against his strong chest, feeling the wild, rapid beat of his heart beneath my palms. “I don't want to run away. I want to stay. With you.”

Lorenzo’s breath hitched. In the next instant, he pulled me flush against his body and brought his lips down onto mine.

The kiss was everything he was: fierce, commanding, desperate, and filled with a passion that consumed every doubt in my soul. I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my hands in his dark hair, giving myself over to the fire between us.

In the arms of the city’s most feared man, I had finally found my sanctuary.
