Chapter 6 - A Dangerous Game

The fallout from the gala was swift and merciless.
The next morning, three major banks announced the freezing of credit lines extended to the Marchetti-Whitfield joint venture. Investors pulled out en masse, realizing that crossing Lorenzo Vescari was corporate suicide.
I was sitting in my new corner office on the fortieth floor of Vescari Holdings. Lorenzo had officially appointed me as the chief executive of the Docklands Urban Development—the very project Daniel had stolen from me two years ago. For the first time in years, I was reviewing blueprints with my own signature stamped on the title block.
A knock sounded on the frosted glass door. Lorenzo walked in, holding a folder, but his usual calm demeanor was replaced by a rigid, guarded stillness.
“We have a problem,” Lorenzo said, closing the door behind him.
I set my pen down. “What happened? Did the city council reject the permits?”
“No. The permits are secure,” Lorenzo said, stepping to the window that overlooked the sprawling skyline. “Daniel went to see Victor Moreno last night.”
A cold dread pooled in my stomach. Even I knew that name. Victor Moreno was the head of a rival crime syndicate operating in the southern ports—a man known for extortion, violence, and an old, bloody feud with the Vescari family.
“What could Daniel possibly offer a man like Moreno?” I asked.
“Information,” Lorenzo replied grimly. “Moreno has been trying to breach our port logistics for three years. Marchetti’s firm managed the secondary customs clearance software for our terminal. Daniel offered Moreno the bypass codes in exchange for three million dollars in offshore funding—and a hit on me.”
I stood up so fast my leather chair rolled back against the credenza. “A hit? Daniel is trying to have you killed?”
“He is desperate, Isabella. Men with bruised egos and empty pockets are the most reckless creatures on earth,” Lorenzo said. He walked over to my desk, leaning his hands on the mahogany surface, staring directly into my eyes. “He didn't just target me. He knows that without you, the debt transfer documents lose their principal executor. Moreno’s men were spotted circling your old apartment building this morning.”
Panic flared in my chest, not for myself, but for the reality of the war I had stepped into. “Lorenzo… I brought this to your doorstep. If I hadn’t agreed to walk back into that ballroom with you—”
Before I could finish the sentence, Lorenzo rounded the desk. His hands came up to frame my face, his thumbs gently sweeping across my cheekbones with an intensity that took my breath away.
“Listen to me,” he said, his voice fierce, deep, and raw with emotion. “You brought nothing upon me that I wasn’t already prepared to destroy. You are under my roof, under my name, and under my protection. No one touches what is mine. Do you hear me?”
*What is mine.*
The words echoed in my soul, setting off fireworks of longing and desire that I had tried so desperately to suppress. In that moment, I realized I was falling for this dangerous, powerful man. Not because of his wealth, not because of his vengeance against Daniel, but because for the first time in my life, a man looked at me and saw someone worth fighting a war for.
“I hear you,” I whispered, leaning slightly into his touch.
Lorenzo’s gaze dipped to my lips. For a fleeting, heart-stopping second, I thought he was going to kiss me. But he pulled back slightly, his jaw tightening with resolute discipline.
“Tonight, we finish this,” Lorenzo said. “Moreno thinks he’s meeting Daniel at the old warehouse district to finalize the wire transfer. We are going to intercept them.”
“We?” I asked.
May you like
“You deserve to see the final nail driven into the coffin of your past,” Lorenzo answered. “It’s time Daniel Marchetti pays his debts in full.”
